Slim PS2 Assistance –
I'm guilty of not using the search function... now that we got that out of the way...
My Slim PS2 was modded by Manny of Socalmods.com when the Slim PS2's were first released, and I haven't had to give it a second thought since then. Recently I went to play a backup game and it wouldn't load. Confused, I tried the retail versions of the same games and they wouldn't load either. Then I tried a DVD as well - no luck. I even tried to initiate the diagnostic mode, but nothing happened. Popping open the cover while a game should be actively spinning reveals the disc just resting in place & not spinning.
I've read that the low quality media is sometimes guilty of laser failure. What do the experts here feel is the cause of my problem? Do you have a replacement part recommendation for me? (I'm not afraid of pulling it apart and dropping a replacement in, but the difficult soldering involved with the Mod Chip is what drove me to socalmods.com initially)
For referrence, I have a SCPH-70012 (Which should be the initial build of the Slim PS2 design, right?)
Poor laser head to begin with or Bad and scratched media could be the cause. To repair you need to replace the tracking and focus coil resistors and the laser head. Laser heads can be had on ebay for around $20.00 and the resistors cost a few pennies. I do these all the time I actually have a special right now $60.00 for everything labor, Resistors and NEW laser head for $60.00. Visit www.newagepsx.com for more info.
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. If I choose to ship my ps2 to you for repair - does the $60 include shipping? Are you "trusted" on these forums? Sorry, I've been out of the scene for a long time.
