im trying to troubleshoot a ps2 i mod'd before the romeo mod was discovered.
so pin 13 controls the sled motor, is this the function that physically moves the laser to read at different locations of the disc? i understand that pin 17 controls the focusing, and i have checked the coils and they both show 5ohms and i can see the laser jumping up and down. PS11 is fine.

isnt that the main cause of failure, the focusing? thats what i gather from reading the numerous threads about the LA, or is the sled motor function the main culprit here?
i have not seen the laser move on its tracks once since i opened it. damn it, tell me its not the LA chip!
i didnt want to experience the dead LA, cause then itll be a lot of finger pointing. i knew i shouldnt have done this ps2 for him. this ps2 was working since feb and the owner said he popped in a dvd and it hasnt worked since. its a v10 with mxl2.

no, everything performs as usual, ie.. tray opens and closes as usual. led's light up normal. only thing is in browser screen, it stays in "reading disc" and never boots anything.
im sorta confused, does sled motor perform ejecting the tray, or does it move the laser horizontally?

Do you hear the laser moving around during the read? You might wanna open the dvd drive up and check to see if anything is stuck there or something. If it's moving and everything is fine then the laser is probably fried. Since it's doing that you said above. You could try to use another V9's laser drive in there and see if that works. If it does then you probably need to replace the laser unit.

when u eject the tray the rail should move a bit so the laser touches the switch

the ps2 is cracked open already. the laser does not move on the rails at all while trying to boot. theres nothing in the rails blocking the movement.
i would love to get my hands on a different laser to test but thats not really an option for me.
the laser still flashes bright red when the tray is closed and bobs up and down.
as for the rail movement, it will only slide in quickly when i press reset, it doesnt move in and out when i use the eject button.
when you first insert a disc, does the laser move around or does it stay near the center like mine?
is removing the chip and getting the ps2 to work first a good option?

Don't know why the chip could be causing this but just remove the power from the chip. Leave all the other wires intact. Just take the power cable out and tape the tip.
