It is quite normal for the ps2 to switch on the cooling fan after it has been operationg for some time. This is because the ps2 develops heat when you're using it to play games and watch dvd's...
It is the same as with a pc, which also has to cool its peripherals to stay operating correctly. My ps2 also does this, but the sound is not annoying in any way, its very silent.
Hmm. I wish I could hear yours because mine definitely wasn't very silent. I sent it back about a week ago to Play.com and I am concerned because if they find nothing wrong with it I have to pay special delivery to get it back.Quote:
its very silent.
Although I realised it had a fan I thought there was something odd about the amount of noise it was making, especially after having heard from others that it was supposed to be 'almost silent.' I looked in the instruction manual and there was no reference to any noise issues. I phoned Sony and they wouldn't tell me whether the extra noise was normal because I was in the first 28 days of purchase. They just told me to speak to Play. So I did and they just sent me a returns code with no explanation. So I sent it back. Now I'm not so sure whether it was faulty :( It sucks because I didn't know anyone who had a slim PS2 and asking this question in other forums just got back 'should be almost silent' replies like yours.
Well let's hope you get it back soon from play.com! Maybe you should not be too concerned about the noise it's making. Why not crank up the volume a little bit :P I think some noise is perfectly normal and it's better to have some noise than a hot pstwo!
so have fun with it and don't bother the noise. Maybe it was a construction fault in the fan, if that's the case they will probably fit your ps2 with a new fan and then the problem should be fixed.
If you're a real hardware tweaker or know someone with experience in modding ps2's you might be able to install a different, silent fan...
Yeah, your probably right, but I have very good hearing and am the type of person who can't sleep if they can hear a dripping tap :D I did turn up the volume but it was annoying others in my family. One of the reasons I got a slim ps2 was because I had heard that it was almost silent. Oh well, let's hope I get it back soon with a not too heafty penalty charge and can finally play Dragon Quest 8! Thanks for your help and happy new year! :dance:Quote:

haha I know that feeling, especially when I'm spinning turntables, then I'm really picky about the sounds I hear. Anyways how about this game Dragon Quest? Is that a good RPG or something ? And do you know if it's available in Europe?
cheers,

It is also known as Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King and from what I've heard it's supposed to be a good traditional RPG with characters designed by the man who drew the Dragonball Z characters (If you have ever seen that anime) I actually have it and about 12 other games but haven't been able to play them because I sent back the PS2 thinking it was faulty!
It's supposed to be available in Europe my friend. I live in the UK and it came out April this year. I always buy a console late into it's lifecycle so I can buy all the games cheap. I bought Dragon Quest 8 from Play.com for £13 with free delivery. That is a very good price considering it only came out this year and the high street shops are selling it for around £35!
great tip man! This looks like a game I would want to play for sure! I've seen the DBZ series, although I'm more fond of adult anime like Kenshin and Fist of the North star. When it comes to buying games and consoles, I use the same strategy as you do :)
Just got an email from Play.com saying that they will send me a replacement as soon as possible. No explanation about the alleged fault though. Bearing in mind they have a strict returns policy and test every returned item it does seem that the console had some kind of fault. I won't know for sure until I get the new one though. At least they refunded the £7.40 special delivery charge and it only took 1 week during the Christmas period to deal with my return :)
I got my replacement last week and it makes exactly the same noise? I guess it must be normal then. Oh well I will just have to put up with it. PS2 is the most noisy console I have owned.
