Last year I bought a used PS2, non slim so that it could be mod chipped.

I don't know if some of you guys knew this company called ModWhiz, but apparently they just suddenly "disappeared". Anyways, I was thinking if I should sell the old PS2 and buy a slimline one? I've been told that PS2 lasers tend to break down easily. The guy at modwhiz told me that they are going to "replace it with a better one so it won't break", but I don't know if I can trust them...

what do you think? I'm still able to sell the PS2 for at least 100$ CAD, just remove the crystal chip and get a new one and get it soldered. Do you recommend this?

I don't really care much about online gaming though.

Heh, if someone sells you something that "won't break" you can already tell they're lying.

Personally, I'd just keep the big PS2. In case you want to use an HD with halfway decent compatibility with games and whatnot.

Well, he replaced it by telling me that PS2 tends to have a problem with their lasers and they're installing theirs...

I never heard about being able to use it with a harddrive...how do i do that? Does it have to be a specific PS2 harddrive or something?

Better check out the HD section of the forum for more in depth info. Basically you can use the Network Adapter and almost any IDE hard drive with a program called HDLoader. It allows you to load games onto the HD for faster load times and no disc swapping. Compatibility is still far from 100%, but the first thing I do when I get a new game is see if it works with it because there really is nothing like it.

You can also get a V12 or V13 slim and have HDConnect or HDCombo installed if you want to use a hard drive. Get a DMS 4 Pro so you can use ToxicOS.

If you want to use a hard drive on your PS2, stick with the brick.

If you're worried about it breaking down -- get a slim ps2. Lasers for the slim ps2 are made by Mitsumi -- NOT sony, as a result, sony can't horde the lasers, stop making them, and leave people hanging. The 400Cs, I've been told by several sources, are no longer being produced by Sony.. and no other company is making them at this time. I'm sure that as long as mitsumi is selling lasers for the slim ps2, they will continue to produce them. And they're about half the price of 400C lasers right now.

Nah you dont need to do any of that crap. Keep your old PS2 and you can boot HDL (HDLoader) with your Crystal Chip. HDL will access the HDD in your old PS2 that you have backed up your games to with winhiip on your PC, all this with absolutely no disc in your PS2 at all.

BTW is your laser still working? Your just concerned about it maybe going out down the road?

A hard drive and WinHIIP will definitely slow that process down a bit.
