Lets say i have a phat ps2, and I would like to play it on the train. That is, get a table seat, hook it up to the seat outlet, hook up a screen to the seat outlet, and play.

I can't just drag in a crt for obvious reasons. They are too damn heavy.

Furthermore, i have my games backed up onto a hard drive. So being able to play from there would be ideal, as to not have to worry about discs skipping from vibration.

What's the ideal product to let me have a screen i can hook the ps2 to without removing the network adaptor?

this product here is the best bet that I've been able to spot.

    Gaming Accessories

Is there something I"m missing? Or is this a spectacularly bad idea all around?

IMHO this is a pretty stupid idea. Reminds me of the old PSone days...

Unless you find yourself taking long train trips constantly I really don't see the use of buying any portable screens for your ps2. I tried to imagine logical places where you could play, but it always had the same outcome: Your sitting there peacefully playing till people start walking by and notice you. It doesn't take them long before they start to point and laugh at you till their sides hurt..... Then they call over others to laugh at the big nerd. Of course maybe because that's exactly what I would do If I saw you . Honestly though, if you really want to play videogames on the go then please move into the god damn 21st century man!

I know there are systems much more suited for portable gaming. I even have one of them.

Honestly i was asking for the benefit of my girlfriends sons, who are going to be very bored on the train trip, and they are 3d game snobs with low attention spans. Besides, then while one plays the ps3 after, another could play the ps2.

    My main concerns are

    a) decent quality/low lag
    b) can keep the network adapter in so hard drive play still works.
    c) actually usable at a table.

I see people running SNES and NDS emulators on laptops all the time on the train.

Besides,I'm sure getting the screen is much cheaper than getting two psps and games for them.

i have a 15in vizio lcd that has composite/component/svideo inputs that is roughly the same size as my fat ps2... i've taken it with me before whenever someone had asked me to do a freemcboot on their memory card. or, if you have one of those tiny portable dvd players they sometimes have a video input... or you might even consider getting a video capture usb dongle for a laptop, if you have a laptop.... there are a lot of options for you here. obviously, it would work with a ps3 as well. also, a second psp purchased second-hand is actually quite cheap nowadays.

Honestly PCSX2 is probably mature enough now and would certainly be the most convenient solution as long as you have a beefy enough laptop to emulate the kind of games they want to play. Most games that don't make extensive use of 3D (Ar Tonelico, Guilty Gear etc.) are playable on my CULV Subnotebook but for intensive games like GT4 or SotC you'd be looking at HP Envy territory.

lol if i had a beefy enough laptop i sure as heck wouldn't let them touch it.

I'm well aware of the video usb dongle+laptop trick too, but they don't have laptops of their own. I would appreciate knowing which one can still be bought and has minimal lag, though.

if they dont have laptops of their own already, then it looks like your only solution is a small lcd like my 15in vizio. generic house-brands like dynex or insignia can be bought cheaply....

    check out benheck.com

this guy "portableizes"consoles for a living.... there are heaps of ideas and user projects....

i have a small screen with speakers that attaches to the rear of the PS2 but i dont think i can still use a network adaptor with it.... will dig it out if i can find it.

i bought it to do a project with a slim PS2 the screen, a 80 Gig 2.5"HDD SATA to USB converter and FMCB booting direct into OPL.
everything works but i am looking for a suitable small case to put it all in....thinking of one of those wooden cutlery cases..
doing it for the same reason as you... keep the kids happy on a long trip...
yes i do have a PSP they play and a GBA SP but the PS2 could also play movies via SMS........
