My last phat PS2, the really, really old one (wouldn't even play DVD movies w/o firmware update) bit the dust so I picked up a cheap one online. It's just barely newer, a phat model. It plays DVD movies, DVD games, CD games, boots my SwapMagic discs, but has trouble reading backup discs that worked on my old system. I think I only got it to load a backup disc once and it was really slow.

Is there anything I can do to fix this? I cleaned the laser but that didn't seem to help.

I Googled a bit and doing the HDLoader method using my network adapter maybe the best bet.

if you can boot the swapmagic disk then you can easily install FMCB to a mem card. search some of my recent posts i have written how to do this before...

if you get a Network Adaptor then use OPL it is better than HDLoader.....but you can have both...

Yeah, I installed FMCB a while back using SM, it was a snap. I've always used SM bc none of my backups are patched, but sometimes I'd load ELF files w FMCB. I bought SM w top-loader a LONG time ago b4 FMCB.
