  1. #1 PS2 wont read PS2 games
    Tedward Guest
So, my friend decided he wanted to open up his PS2 to take a look inside. He's watched me work on my xbox before, but has no other experience with opening console systems. As youve probably guessed, he managed to bugger something up. Ive tried looking inside, but I have little experience with a PS2 myself, so I wasnt sure what to look for. He has a version 5/6.

Basically what happens now is it all boots up fine, and music CDs and PSX games run fine, but when we put in a PS2 game, it just sits there saying "reading cd" or whatever it is. Has anyone had this problem before, or does anyone know what could possibly be causing it?

So you just open it up then it never worked with PS2 games again? Just by "openning" it? No modchip?

No, no modchip. He just opened it, took it apart, and then put it all back together.

Weve tried a number of disks, and weve tried cleaning them, still no luck. And I would think if the laser were weak, other CDs wouldnt work either, although I could be wrong. I dont know much about CD drives.

Can the thing boot PS2 CD-R based games? You might want to take everything apart and try to put it back together again. He probably didn't connect one of the ribbon cable properly.

Are those PS2 games DVD based ? PSX games and audio cds are on CD media, while most PS2 games are on DVD. Test the machine with a CD based PS2 game, if that boots your DVD laser/controller is damaged and it results in not reading DVDs. You can also test an original DVD movie, and a backup movie.

Do you mean backed up games? Or do some PS2 games come on CD-R's? O.o

And we thought it was probably one of the ribbon cables, so weve tried it a few times, with no luck. Is there some secret trick with one of them or something?

Edit: From uns97's post it looks like some games come on CD-R. How do you tell the difference?

Do you have a PS2 game with blue color dye on the back of the disc? Those are PS2 CD-R games. But just try to test a DVD movie like uns said... if that doesn't work then what he said is likely correct or some other weird reassemble of the PS2 error cause your laser to not read DVDs anymore.

The PS2 can read CD and DVD media aswell. If one part of the laser dies, the other part still works fine. Test the machine with a dvd movie, and if that fails, the dvd part of that laser is gone. The DVD based originals have a DVDROM sign on the backside of the box (and on the disk itself) while the CD based ones have a compact disk sign.

Tried a DVD movie, didnt work Any ideas on how to fix?

Also, he has one blue disc, but his PS2 has always been abit sketchy with those. According to him, the system cant spin the disc fast enough to get a proper read. He calls them PC disks.
