PS2 wont play DVD games but will play CD games ?

Need some opinons

My friend got his PS2 modded by a modder on this board and he just got it back today , i won't mention the modders name because i am not sure if it is his fault .

But the problem is that the PS2 will not play DVD's (orginal PS2 or backed-up PS2 games or Movies ) but it will play CD's (orginal PS1 and backed-up PS1 games and backed up PS2 games on CD'r) so now this means that the M2 pro chip is working because it is playing backups even though they are only CD'rs but why wont it play DVDr's ???

PS2 is a V4 and it was modded with M2pro , the modder was called today and he suggested it was the laser and offered to fix it for 55.00 (price of laser), but this is before we found out it would play CDr's .

When the PS2 was sent to modder it played all orginal PS2 games and Movies just fine , and now it doese'nt and i even tried turning modchip off to see if that helped but it did not ?

Is it the laser or is it something else like the mod or BA chip ?

I had the same thing happen to me. Just to make it clear, you will have to buy a new laser every 5-6 months like me.

So is the idea that a modder "blew out" a laser. Yeah, if his install incorporates the use of dynamite.

Now then, Gonz, the issue is the install. A wire might have popped off somewhere, and the v4 has a couple 'problematic' pin placements that are prone to this. Have it looked at by another installer, or send it back to the original installer for a warranty check.

The fact that it plays burnt CD's is proof positive that it is not the laser, as is the key detail that it played all originals before leaving. If the installer is worth his salt, he'll own up to the fact that his install needs to be scrutinized.

I modded my own PS2 w/DMS3. I had the exact problem. Turns out after cleaning my laser lens (alcohol & Q-tip) it worked flawlessly.

Yours doesn't work with the chip in sleep? Try cleaning the lens first anyway. Not hard. Remove the cover, then remove the tray assy cover. Then clean the lens.

I don't know why. Maybe the mod chip draws power from the laser circut and makes it more imperitive that the lens is clean? Maybe the chip needs a stronger (strongest) read voltage, since it worked fine before, or with the chip in sleep?

Well i was thinkin the same thing , so that was the first thing i did clean the laser with no luck !

So far opinions are its the laser or the install ?

I just happen to have a new laser being shipped to me for another PS2 i will try that in my friends PS 2 and see what happens ?

but still welcome all opinions , i guess the thing i wonder most is could it be the install ?

i modded my own ps2 and i have exactly the same problem.
it's nothing wrong with the laser or anything to do with the system itself. it is because the solders go into the wrong place or its do not contact with the board.
what you need to do is re-solder the points on the back.....

yea i think you guys are right its the install !
i told my friend to send it back to the installer , hopefully he doesnt BS him and tell him its the laser .

I had the same problem and I cleaned the laser lens with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol. Worked perfect.

Could be a bad solder joint to the dvd controller or whatever.
