PS2 V14 laser sound when reading disc
PS2 V14 laser sound when reading disc –
When I play streaming games like Shadow of the Colossus I can hear (and see if I have the lid open) the laser moving back and forth working when I'm out in the open and it's loading the environment etc. I was just wondering if this is normal? When I play games like Jak 2 and DMC3 I only hear this sound when the game is loading and not so much while playing. Is it like this on the original PS2 games also or does the laser work harder when reading backups? The games loads and plays fine without any slowdowns etc. Im just curious about this sound the laser makes.
I'm using SM 3.6 with Verbatim DVD-R btw.
it is normal gta vice city will also do the same..make sure you burn at 1x or 4x MAX ..
i have this problem too. i can hear the disc being read. before i got my ps2 modded, it wasn't very audible. wat's up?
some V14 have the lasers Cranked up to high last 2 systems i had strate out of the box wuld have a hard time reading retail Dvd movie.. Had to drop it by 19 ohms for it to read corectly and have alot of noise on the scope..
What would be optimal for a v14, becuase I'm having similar issues. And exactly where would I check?
First check your media with DVD Identifier and make sure it's decent, most Verbatim branded media is manufactured by Mitsubishi Chemicals and is reasonable, but there is Verbatim brand media manufactured by other companies including Taiyo Yuden (Excellent), Ritek (Passable) and CMC Magnetics (Poor).

Well, I've tried many types of media including Taiyo Yuden and I get the same result. It's not that loud and it doesn't really bother me so it's not really a big deal. I was just curious about the sound.

Perhaps I could get some "suggested values" and try them out to see if I get a decent improvement. I though it was my soldering but I just finished a v13 which worked fine and I've redone my v14 since testing and I'm sure it's fine since everything works, just the laser seems to have to work a little hard. Almost wish I had gone with a v13.
So there are no loud noises from the laser with the V13 and the same discs? Hmm.

Could someone try to ride around on the map in Shadow of the Colossus and see if you hear the laser moving back and forth? That's the game gives me this laser noise the most.
As I said before... other games give me these laser sounds too but only when loading and sometimes for a sec or two during gamesplay. God of War for example streams alot too, but no noise from the laser there.
Guess I'll have to wait and see how long the laser lives
