    Sony sells Playstation-packing TV

    3rd December 2010 12:06 GMT

All sorts of tech has been integrated into TVs from iPod docks to Blu-ray players, but now Sony has put a Playstation into one and it's available in the UK for under £200.

The Sony Bravia KDL-22PX300 is a 22in LCD TV with a built-in PS2, which allows users to play classic games and watch DVDs. Old Playstation titles still play in standard definition but the 720p TV has four HDMI slots, includes a built-in Freeview tuner and an Ethernet port for internet video. With an additional dongle, it can go online wirelessly. It also has three USB sockets, plus Scart, VGA and component-video connectors.

PS3s haven't been backwards-compatible with the PS2 since some of Sony's very first models, and a Bravia HDTV with all those connections and a built-in PS2/DVD player is surely good value at that price.

Console-integrated televisions are uncommon, with Fuji Television's Sega Dreamcast based Divers 2000 Series CX-1 the only attempt we're aware of since Sharp teamed up with Nintendo in the early 1980s to bring us the C1 NES TV.

There were also rumours in 2008 that Samsung was set to partner Microsoft for an Xbox 360 integrated TV, but it never materialised.

The Bravia KDL-22PX300 is available for £200 from Richer Sounds and comes with one controller. ®

Personally I would not even try to do that, but would settle for using SwapMagic discs to boot uLE from MC, just like I do with my v18 console that has bios v2.30 (blocking FMCB).

I assume that this is basically the same console repackaged for direct interface to the TV it's combined with. They've Probably just routed the component outputs from the PS2 motherboard to the component inputs of the TV. Apart from that I expect it to be the same console as the v18, though hopefully in a sturdier cover, as it now serves as base for the TV.

I'd be surprised if they really have developed a new bios to combine TV control menus with those of the PS2. Most likely it is still the same bios v2.30 as in the current SCPH-900xx model.

But it will be very interesting to see any reports from people running homebrews (or trying) on this hybrid unit, to see if my assumptions here are correct.

I think you are right about the separate ps2 controls by looking at the instruction manual on sony's site here. Seems to be an unusual method of opening the disc cover. Looks like it could be easy to manipulate for disc swapping methods of playing backups.

I don't think I'll be asking Santa for one of these, but it is interesting.

I thought it would've been cooler if the PS2 was built into the TV itself, rather than be stuck at the bottom :/

This unit is also available in Europe mainland.

    Few more images here.

Not the best design by far..... but I may just bite for the DNLA compliance and Bravia video service.

I should be getting my hands on one of these soon, probably not before Christmas though.

A more in-depth spec can be found at Sony BRAVIA KDL22PX300 | 22 inch LCD TV/PlayStation 2 HD Ready Freeview | Richer Sounds - this is also the cheapest place to buy one for those who are interested, although you have to place the order at one of their retail shops.

The rumour mill suggests that this TV is the result of an agreement between Sony and a third party company responsible for refurbishing PS2 consoles. This is backed up by the less than inspiring design of the set and the fact that it only appears on the support section of Sony's website, not the product listing. If this is indeed the case, it's possible that a variety of refurbished slim console boards could've found their way into the set, so FMCB might not be locked out on all of them.

At any rate, Swap Magic Coder looks like the easiest way to enable homebrew on the set. I doubt people would void the warranty of the TV just to chip the embedded console.

I'm also interested to see how the internal connection is accomplished. I'd like to think it uses a component RGB output (as opposed to YCbCr, to avoid colour conversion by the video processing circuits in the TV) but we'll see.

It has 1 USB 2.0 port, most likely only accessible by the TV, and 2 USB 1.1 ports, most likely exclusive to the PS2. It also has 2 Optical outputs, implying the PS2 doesn't share the TV's one of those either.

If Sony claims full PS2 compatibility for a new console model, then it has to have USB ports, since several PS2 game releases by Sony require them (like all Eye-Toy stuff).
