Before i start, i know lots of questions get repeated and someone may ask me to use the search engine but i have tried, and all the results seem to only be partially useful, so if you can find more relevant posts, please link to them in my topic.

I have a version 7 ps2 which was great and worked extremely well playing original games and music, until one day i decided i would like to make backups of my cd's and use those instead, thus minimizing damage to my originals. 'Hmmmmmmm' I thought, 'how could one go about this conundrum?'. Luckily i was going to india in a few days time 'Could i use this to my advantage?' I pondered. After arriving at the beast of a city that is Delhi (and having unpacked) I immediately set forth (on a rickshaw - so technically the rickshaw driver set forth) to Palika Bazaar - the capitals only underground shopping centre (as in under the ground, not dodgy, although it is). After asking many people i found someone willing to modify my playstation for about 15 quid (i didnt no much about modchips then). This pedant then went about opening my ps2 for a good hour and prodding around until he finally decided that he could only modify it to play gold discs, not silver. 'Well, if you're going to get it chipped, might as well get the best' I mused, so decided not to get it done, and wait the so called 10 days it would take to recieve the appropriate chip. It took longer and eventually I ended up with no time to get it chipped. So i brought it back home and decided to get a DMS3 plus fitted (not now thats illegal in England - i have given up the idea and gotten on with my life), but before i could i decided to have a game of GTA3 ('why not?' you may speculate). Here comes the problem, IT DIDNT WORK. The ps2 screen went straight to the memory options screen and the PS2 sounded dead when it tried to access the disc. But here comes the crucial point, i went and bought a CD cleaner hoping that would solve the problem (it was a voice guided CD) which worked perfectly, i could hear CD Audio fine. Then I tried a PS1 game which worked fine, as well as a PS1 backup, which the PS2 recognized as it asked for an original disc. But when i tried DVD PS2 games and movies there were simple data read errors.

In summary my pS2 plays CD's not DVDS (I havent tried CD based PS2 games) how do i fix this, bearing in mind i am new at this and have no mechanical/electrical capabilities whatsoever, apart from the basics.

Are the following guides relevant?

Bear in mind there is a lot of dirt in India maybe this had an effect?
