On my ps2 (scph-30091) when I start it with no disk in, it goes to the main menu of course, but the little balls that usually rotate individually on any other ps2 i've seen, on mine they're clumped into one ball and they dont move around. I'm curious as to why its like this. Is it just my version of ps2 or what??

Set your time on the console.

if you cold boot or reset the system and it returns to that state again, the lithium battery is dead in the system. If that is the case, you have to open up the system and replace it. I think it is a CR2032 battery, but you would be wise to look at the battery itself to determine what model battery you would need.

sorry to hijack your thread, but i have a question regarding the battery:
what are the side effects (besides the one mentioned here) of not replacing the battery when its dead? what else would it affect?
V7 ps2, flip top, 2x 8MB sony memcards, FMCB 1.8b, ESR r9b, Cogswap, Hdloader0.8c, 250 gig Western Digital, poorly modded(but functional) network adapter

I've removed the battery in mine once just to see and it goes to a color test screen. It can also disallow function sometimes.

I've seen some ps2s that would do that after they were unplugged for a while. Setting the time fixed it for me.
