PS2 cannot play DVD video discs
PS2 cannot play DVD video discs –
Yeah, this is happening. Got 100+ hits on the same topic from google. Unfortunately, I've a different problem.
This is PS2-slim scph-9001 NTSC, modded. My retailer tells me that it is modded with a Matrix v3.0 mod chip, but I've a serious doubt. Holding triangle+circle during boot-up doesn't bring up configuration menu, holding start during boot-up does not turn off the mod chip and so on. None of the key combination complying a matrix mod-chip works for me. So the only conclusion I can draw from it is that, it is not a Matrix(infinity?) mod chip. But this is just the beginning of the problem.
Recently, I tried to play DVD movies on the PS2. Since I've no idea what mod chip is hiding out there, I tried all possible approaches(for all possible mod-chips) to play DVD movies. The only approach through which I managed to get anywhere near is putting PS2 to standby and then holding up reset button for a few seconds to boot. Alright, now it recognizes my DVD movies as a PS2 disc but if I press X, it returns to the same screen over and over again. At the very least, I've a feeling that I'm following up the correct DVD-boot procedure for whatever mod chip is in there, since every other methods results in *No data*. So a little bit of insight here would be great. At least, a push in the right direction would be heavily appreciated!
And of course, I can play backup game discs but not DVD video discs(backup or original). I'd open up the casing and look up the mod-chip if that is what it takes to get any help on this problem. But I've a feeling that mod-chips aren't labelled with their type so that would hardly turn out to be any good. Just let me know.
I suggest you open the machine, and see what is in it. That really is the only reliable way, I think. Do

It isn't very difficult. You say you can play backups of games, but not DVDs. Are these original
DVDs, and are they for your region? P/H you are going outside the abilities of your mod if you aren't
playing original DVDs for your region.
Indeed, but due to the fact that my retailer has given me 6 months warranty on the console parts and hooked a warranty sticker on the screw joints. Since the official SONY warranty is void as the PS2 is modded, I think I'd have to stick with the service warranty, the retailer has given me. Still, I got some soldering skills and of course, that includes disassembling a console. So that route would obviously be my last option.

Well, then you probably don't have Matrix Inf. What you can do is hold the power button for a few seconds just before the ps2 booting screen shows up, then your modchip will be disabled and it will work. To turn it on again, just reset it.
As I've said before, I did try that. But the console recognizes the disc as PS2 disc in the browser menu and if I press X to continue loading, it returns to the same screen over and over again. I'm kind of stuck in here.

Thanks for making your point, whatsoever.
