    I recieved a V6 PAL PS2 from a friend to repair.

The laser it has is a stock open faced Sanyo HD7 (KHS-400R).

The PS2 was having problems reading most CDs so my friend thinking he knows it all adjusted the wrong pot (DVD) and now DVDs don't work although CDs do regardless of tweaking the DVD pot again to default position.

So then he orders a replacement laser (the same type, open faced) and I installed it after removing the solder which protects the laser from static (normal procedure) but the laser doesn't work with ANY media. The drive makes 4 clicking sounds when media is inserted and then just stops with CD-R and with DVD-R it does spin the disc but seems not able to read it and makes funny sounds.

I have replaced quite a few lasers before for friends for their PS2's and they worked fine but they never touched the pots, the lasers just wore out.

Does this mean the BA chip is fried or something in this V6?

I have tried about 3 WORKING lasers on this unit now and none work but putting the original laser back in it works but only ith CDs.

What is the problem and is there a solution apart from telling him to get a new PS2

    Thanks.

Yeah - I find this problem often too.
I don't know what it is from. I'm going to post and ask around too.
I wonder if the lasers need pot adjustment??
