It does that no matter if I play for 2 hours or start it after sitting there for a day. The disc doesn't make any kind of sounds, just ordinary clicks when it reads the dvd. I cleaned the lens today with no improvement. I only have problems with the sound while playing FIFA 10 (when the commentator speaks-tutning off the comentator's voice solves the thing) and NFS undercover (when the police speak-again, turning off the voice solves the problem). On the other hand, the video problems occur on almost any games. The graphics shiver like in the video. The heatsink is clean so I don't think it's overheating. I don't know much about PS2's, but can it be that the thermal grease has dried in there? The PS2 hasn't been used for quite some time before I got it.
OK - this theory I have was based on someone with something similar:
It's possible that your SPU's (Sound Processing Unit) memory and GS (Graphics Synthesizer)'s VRAM is going bad.
Someone on this forum complained that his PS2 showed garbled graphics - but it occurs the moment his PS2 was powered on (Displaying the OSD).
About the thermal compounds used on the PS2 chips... I don't think that that would really happen, as I seem to see thermal pads inside the PS2, instead of thermal paste.
Overheating may occur (If the cooling system somehow becomes insufficient)... but it's not a widespread issue (Otherwise most of the older PS2s would have already broken down).
Have you tried doing a reset the moment the graphics becomes garbled?
Does the PS2 still display graphics corruption when displaying the OSD at that point?
BTW: What is your PS2's model?
Is it's fan still working properly?
