I chipped my PS2 last week (no more green tint with RGB cables !) and was said that using my PS2 to play DVD movies was a bad idea because it kill the laser.

While I would agree that earlier models could be fragile, I can't understand why recent slim models that are validated by sony to read RW media would die on me just by playing movies ?

    What do you think ?

Playing DVD-R will not cause any unusual harm, but playing DVD-RW will require higher laser intensity which will shorten the laser lifetime. In principle this applies to all units, and not just the ones in a PS2, but those are notorious for being overly sensitive. So much so that most veterans consider CDVD laser death as being not so much as a question of "IF" as of "WHEN" it is going to happen. But avoiding RW media can at least postpone the inevitable.

In any case neither of my consoles (a fat v7 and a slim v15) seem capable of reading DVD-RW discs, so I don't even have the option of using such... They work perfectly with DVD-R though, so I have no worries about imminent laser death here. It's just RW discs that don't work at all.

    Best regards: dlanor

My PS2(v10) don't like at all DVD-R or there is some other reason for his behavior. It boots them literally whenever he wants but ones he boot the game it read it like booktyped DVD+R(DVD-ROM) or almost like the original disk.

I don't have any problem with booktyped DVD+R to DVD-ROM and my PS2 don't like RW too.

Ok, I'll stay away from those RW and keep to good quality DVD-R media.

It's a funny thing that I've yet to see an Sony Audio CD or Video DVD player die while Playstations are plaged with all those defects since birth (The lens failed for 2 PSX for me). Maybe I was just lucky with my CD walkmans.
