They are Par files. You have to use them with smartpar.
They are for say if you download 45 files for a game and rar 33 is missing you can use the par files to fill in the gaps. Pretty cool really.
If you are confident that you have all the files you can leave the par files untill you need them or not.

mm dunno. Usually they are in order but ill take a guess that it wont matter.
Fire up smartpar and it basically does everything for you.
And unless you are actually missing any rar's you dont need any.

PARs (Or parity files) Are nice. Get as many of them as you possibly can. If you can get the whole set that is better. What they do is take information from the whole set of RARed files after they are created. Using the pars (and SmartPar - I use FSRaid) it will basically verify the integrity of your RAR set (Sort of like an SFV check) The nice thing about pars is, if you have enough of them (and enough rars) but may be missing 1 or 2 rar files. The PAR checker will be able to create the missing RARs for you! This comes in REALLY handy especially when dealing with newsgroups. If you want info on the FSRaid or anything like that. PM me.

the thing though about par files, is you can only recover as many files as you are missing to the limit of the pars...

for example, if you are missing 14 rars, and you have 13 pars, you wont be able to recover any. but if you are missing 14 rars and have 14 (or more) pars, then you can recover them all!

the pars dont have to be in any order, they are just numbered for your convience.

and btw - the .par file is the information file, you cant use it to recover files.

www.nfonews.com has some more info on it

PAR files are PARity files and are a software version of file recovery method used in hard drive RAID arrays. These PAR files act as "wildcards" and have the capability of rebuilding any missing or corrupted file(s) in a multipart RAR set on a one-to-one relationship. That is, if you're missing .r03, r08, and r23, you only need to download ANY three .p0x files to rebuild your missing pieces. You do NOT need to download every .p0x file - just an equal number to represent the parts you're missing.

Although Mirror and SmartPAR were the initial utilities produced to support this new concept, FSRaid by FluidStudios has come to be the best and fastest at creating and repairing RAR sets and unlike the other two apps, is constantly being updated and improved. You can download version 2.7.0 at http://www.fluidstudios.com/fsraid.html

Be sure to read their explaination of how this technology works for a clearer understanding.
