    what is HDloader...
Its a program that allows Game Disc images {ISOs}to run from an internal HDD{IDE} in a PS2

    Where do i buy it?
Only the Original Disc is sold {becoming harder to find}, but you can get it FREE from many places all over the internet via a google search

    how do i use it?
Its a homebrew app {.ELF} and can be run with any ELF launching program, such as Free Mcboot or uLaunchELF

    what equipment do i need?
A PS2 capable of using an internal IDE Hard Drive

what is better HDloader or chip?
If you only want to run games from a HDD, then HD Loader....but if you want to do more, then a chipwould be the better choice, however, Free McBoot might be all you need to use and save yourself the trouble of modchip troubles when it comes to picking the right one ...for the right price and finding someone to install it for you.

    Just a stupid suggestion :

Look around the forums in the respective categories and you might find all those answers ....and more.

what do i search for the free version?
Google: use "HD Loader" as your search term or try "HDL download"........or just go to sksapps.com.....

If your PS2 is a FAT one, it will have a cover on the back that hides an 'expansion bay', where you attach the Network Adapter. You cant use a HDD without that adapter.

    Look here:

    Are you kidding me here??!!

hmm that Network Adapter helps me to play online?
    yes.....that was its intended purpose

but if i don't want to play online do i still have to buy it?
You do if you want to connect an IDE Hard Drive and use it.

    and if i have a slim ps2?
If you have the first 2 versions, you can buy HD Combo and use a special connection for a HDD and wont need the Network Adapter made for the FAT consoles. Im sure you can see by the pictures in that link i gave your Slim doesnt have any place to put one.

How should the HDD kill your laser?
The laser only die, if it is accesed, which it is not on HD-Access.

Install Free McBoot a.k.a. "FMCB" with the standard-apps HDLOADER and ESR and you´re fine.

For your purpose, it seems to be more than enough.
If you don´t mind, if PS1-Game-Backups/Imports work, or not and if PS2-CD-Games need to be converted to DVD (not many), then you´re fine.

You can play from HD and you also can load burned&(ESR-)patched PS2-Games.

    Look at the FMCB-Nooby-Tutorial.

About your Question "if so what do you use a chipped ps2 or HDD? =P".
    I personally use both.

PS2 with Chip, patched HDL on MC and FMCB on MC.
Thought you don´t need a chip, if you do not plan excessive playing anymore,...

What kills a lens is using discs....it wears and dont last forever.

I use the lens as little as possible by using Free McBoot and HD Loader as TnA mentioned.

I use those both in all my un modded consoles. I have the chipped ones mainly because they were so i could make skins for them.....and Free McBoot wasnt available at the time, so i could run a backup off disc if HDL or ToxicOS were incompatible.

I dont have but a few games on backup discs, most are in ISO form on a big storage HDD on one of my PCs. If i feel the need to run a game off a disc...well, i just use the originals.
