you dont need a chip to play original Ps1 games on a Ps2...... if you have original Ps1 games you should be able to just drop it in and play.
.
your mod chip seems useless if it doesn't playoff/read usbs..... if your chip allows you to launch .elf files you'd be way better of with FreeMcboot 1.8 and using the tutorial above or this one

If you have a modchip, you should be able to just plop in any game and it should be able to run.
However, if you wanna try this, it's worth the trouble if you have any PS1 game and it's on a DVD/CD. (Not sure if modchips will change the instructions a little, but I don't know.)
I recommend sensor-modding your ps2 slim, if nothing seems to work for you, and to just follow the instructions below. (READ EVERYTHING BEFORE ATTEMPTING THINGS!)
Requirements:
1 Original PS1 Game
1 PS1 Game from where ever you got it
1 Sensor-Modded PS2 (Ps2 Phats are somewhat more complicated, but I have Slim)
There are 2 ways of doing this:
1. Advanced Timing Way
2. Easy, Safe, Long Way (by a little)
1. Advanced Timing Way
First, make sure your PS2 is able to run discs when the lid is open!! You can put in your original Ps1 Game, and when the PS1 Logo Appears, Immediately swap discs with your original ps1 game to your other PS1 Game.
If successful, the game should boot away from the PS1 Logo and into the other game. If not, try your luck again, or use the 2nd method below.
2. Easy, Safe, Long Way
Make sure that there is no disc in your Slim Tray. Head over to the PS2's Browser (Where you look through Memory Card Files and stuff)
Un-jam the sensor by the power button. (If you haven't done so)
Put in your original ps1 disc.
Re-Jam the sensor by the power button.
Wait for 1-2 seconds to let the original ps1 disc spin.
Perform the swap. (Tip: If your disc spindle (the circular thingy in the middle of the Slim Tray) is controlled by an electric magnet, then go ahead and put your index finger through the hole on your other ps1 disc, and then using the index finger to Hold down the disc spindle, then let go of the disc from your index finger, letting it slide down. then apply force onto the ps1 disc to get it into the disc spindle.) <--- It's just to prevent your ps1 disc from getting scratched. Your original should be fine, just the disc that you input into the tray when you're swapping is at risk of getting scratched.
Wait for 1-2 seconds to let the ps1 disc spin.
Press X on the PS1 Disc Icon in the browser.
It should now load the game perfectly. No need to swap discs at the PS1 Logo with this Method.
Enjoy.

If it is able to launch .ELF files (.ELF files are like .EXEs for PCs), then you are better off installing FreeMcBoot 1.8. (To prevent doing these long grueling processes in this post)
