it's not (a or b)
this is the date code which is composed of a number (which means the last digit of year of manufacture) and a letter (which means the quarter).
example: 7A = Date Code (January, February,March) of 2007
9D = Date Code (October, November, December) of 2009

it's true that the majority does not have the date code, but to know if it is compatible with freemcboot, just testing it, is seeing the version of the bios with the appropriate program or trying to install freemcboot, no other way
