Need Advice on Swap Magic, Newbie here. Help please! –
Hey guys. So out of boredom, i've decided to revive my PS2 out of my closet. Knowing how stupid I am with games, of course I sold all of my PS2 games. So i've looked into Swap Magic, MCboot and all that methods. Swap Magic seems to have the best reviews and seems to be the most efficient way. Just bear with me here though, i don't know much about modding or anything like that. I've made the swap tool thing with a credit card, which works good. I've tried some other methods to play my CD's on my PS2 but they failed.
So I found Swap Magic 3.8 on amazon for about $16 plus shipping. I'm willing to buy it, but I just want to know the exact steps i have to take in order to do it and if i'll be able to do it. I have a fat ps2 (its very old, got it when they first were released) The model is SCPH - 39001. Now i've read things about only certain types of CD's or DVD's work. I found whatever was lying around in my house, which are Sony CD-R's as it says on the disk and on windows it says DVD-RW with 700 MB on them. Will Swap Magic work with these? ( I know 700 MB is not alot, but I usually play games less than this size actually) Now I've heard things about DVD-RW's that it will damage the laser, or it will flat out just not work, even with swap magic. I'm honestly not too sure how swap magic works, it would be great if someone explained it to me.
Yes I have also looked into the 007 Agent Under Fire Method too, but swap magic seems to be more efficient.
It'd be great if someone can educate me more about all of this and recommend whats best. I know these are stupid and common questions.
The cheapest, easiest way to mod your ps2 is to send you memory card to a volunteer and have FMCB installed. All it will cost is one padded envelope and postage both ways. That's probably less then $16 plus shipping. With FMCB you can run any homebrew program including ESR which will enable you to play back up copies of your games. Once you get FMCB, be sure to make another FMCB in case something happens to the first one.
Yes I've heard of this way too, but I wasn't too sure about it. Where can I find the official site and all the information for this?
Free McBoot Home You won't be able to use CD-RW or DVD-RW. They have to be DVD-R or DVD+R. With a DVD+R you will have to set the booktype to DVD-ROM. You can use CD-R if you don't mind doing a swap trick every time you want to load that game. If you get Free McBoot installed you can use ESR to play patched discs (no swap trick needed), it takes about 1 second to patch a disc, they have to be burnt to a DVD, CD games will need rebuilding. You will also be able to run OPL, with OPL you can load games from the PS2 HDD or from your PC over the network. You can also use it to load from USB but it takes to long and the videos will skip as the USB ports are to slow.
ok, the thing you can do is use swapmagic to install FMCB to your MC . it is very easy ,requires no swapping . all you need is the noobie package found on this site and a USB thumb drive.

2. in the noobie package you will find BOOT.ELF this is uLE( ulaunchelf) make a copy of this file ,name the copy SWAPMAGIC.ELF , yes in capitals. place this file in the SWAPMAGIC folder.
3. put the noobie package in the root of the USB drive. unrar'd of course. you should have a few folders and a file called FREE_MCBOOT.ELF
4. put USB drive in PS2
5. put swapmagic disk in PS2 and reboot PS2.
6. at boot of swapmagic it will look for the folder and file on the USB drive. it will launch this file which is now uLE.
7 use uLE file browser to find mass: , then highlight the FREE_MCBOOT.ELF file and run it. O or X depending on how you set up uLE.
8. fmcb installer is now running do a multi install .
9. when finished you can now boot your PS2 from the memory card and will have ESR,SMS,HDLoader OPL etc you can add or remove programs you dont want with uLE also up date by overwriting the old versions when new ones become available.
i cant think of a simpler and easier way to install FMCB. no swapping required no damage to the PS2 and no disks need to be burned.
the only easier way is to find one of us installers to do it for you for the price of postage.
