Ok.. I bought a premod ps2 in taiwan in 2000. It had an apple modchip on it. Because it doesn't load 100% of the time, i decided to open it to check if some of the point need to re-solder. Anyways, i took apart the ps2 and any point looked pretty clean to me. I did resolder a point or 2 to make it look nicer. When i put it back together it would not work.

The ps2 bootsup and everything but it won't read originals or dvd movies or even ps1 games. The dvd drive does make weird noises. You can hear 3 level of sounds. It would read for 2 seconds, and then i guess it would try to rread it by spining faster thus the different intensity of the sounds.

ANyways I do remember that sometimes when im playing games on cd-r it would make scratching sounds. Really really bad scratching sound. It was actually one game, i reburned it onto a different type of disc which fixed it.

So.. is my ps2 broken? My dvd drive still spins, i am guessing the laser needs to be replaced? please help. thanks BTW i opened up my dvd drive too, and i can see the red laser moving.

Did this just started happening or happened from the beginning?

If it just started happening then it is completely normal. Because after 4 years of ussage the laser should wear off. Now replacing the laser will fix your loading problem. But I think you just caused another problem... By trying to resolder it yourself.

Try replacing the laser yourself if you feel that you know how to. If it still does not boot originals or backups... I recommend sending it to someone who fixes PS2. (I don't by the way just in case you consider me )

Also check over the points that you resoldered - its easy to splash a bit of solder where its not supposed to go.

And any of you belive there was an Apple chip back in 2000 ? No non-swap mod existed that time, so this is some kind of missunderstanding or typo...

Sounds like one of the cables is loose or the laser needs to be cleaned.

Seeing the red beam does not mean that the laser is ok, as the strength of the laser may be weak.
