Hi, I've been around the PS1, Dreamcast, and Xbox hacking scene and know all about them, but I'm new to the PS2 scene.

My kids are getting a PS2 for Xmas and I'd like to have a chip and some games ready when it gets here. They're ages 6, 8, and 9. Which chip will be the least confusing for them to fiqure out how to load games, and with lowest error rate. I'm used to the other systems where you just throw a game in and play it like normal. I want to do that with PS2 also, but it seems like you have to reset power and push a certain button on the controller, etc.... So what do you guys recommend. Thanks!

I recommend a premod for your kids. You wont need to send it to a pro to get it modded. Well if you want the extra features like fast boot mode and being able to play media player thru mem card is good. Messiah2 is good mod for you if you dont want all of those features but want a good chip. Mars2 and Magic V for v9 is good. Well I hope this helps.

The machine is a V7. Why would I want a premod? I can do it myself. I don't need any special features. Just the basics, while being reliable. What is this "fast boot mode" and "media player"? Guess it's time to do another search...

That's fine. They have a PS1 for those games and 5 dvd players in the house, so they won't be using it for either of those. Just for playing PS2 games. I will be doing both CD-R and DVD-R backups. Any secrets to making the games? Are they all like the PS1 games, bin and cue files?
So, the Messiah 2 would be my best bet? Any recommendations on where to purchase the chip? I have been looking at www.modchipman.com. Seems to have good prices.

    Thanks for the quick replies!

I have ordered my dms3 from modchipman and he is great.

Fastboot mode is where you push start on the controller for the dms3 so it can make games be loaded so quickly.

Guys you are recommending an over kill for him - He does not need all the extra features of the DMS he just wants to boot PS2 games from the browser for his kids to play!

I recommend any of the following 3 chips on the V7:
    DUO
    Apple Pro
    Messiah2 V1.30

I would not touch any of the others. DMS is a good chip but much more than what you require - and also much more expensive.

Same goes for the Messiah2 - very expensive for what you get.

Personally I would go with the DUO for ease of install (has only 17 wires) and reliability along with price.

Followed by the Apple pro also for price and reliability. Has 22 wires but still one less than the messiah and is just Cheaper than DUO and a hell of a lot cheaper than Messiah2.

If you only want one chip - speak to Jason at modchips.cc they offer them for like $18.99 (Apple Pro) and $21.99 (DUO) including shipping - very good deal!!

I could help with quantity orders but for a single buy - modchips.cc is who you want to speak to!

Wow, ShadowKnyght, thanks for the great site and info!

I spent some time checking out modchips.cc, but I have a question, if you don't mind.

The Apple Pro, Apple Pro 2, and the Mini Apple, all seem to have the same features, except the Pro and Pro 2 say -Boot from Browser and the Mini Apple says -PS2 logo. Any idea what that means?

The Pro and Mini are both $18.99 and the Pro 2 is $20.99, but I can't fiqure out what makes it better and more expensive. Again, any idea?

    Thanks!

OK, I did a search and found this thread...
    http://www.ps2newz.net/forums/showth...ighlight=Apple

bighap says "The Mini Apple and Apple 2 Pro have been replaced with the Apple Pro. The code has supposedly been improved." Doesn't make much sense, but ok. So, I guess I will go w/ the Pro.

the duo might be a better option since it is less wires.

besides the apple brand seems so confusing
