i got mine installed...i live in Oshawa ON and nothing is wrong...just dont go and publicy do modchips....
your fine its not like the cops are gonna kick in your door and take apart your ps2.
To the best of my knowledge the buying, selling and installing of modchips in Canada is perfectly legal. However, you would be wise not to deal with buying or selling of backup copies of any kind as that is not legal.
hmm, i found an article from 2002 about a guy that was charged in canada by the rcmp for selling ps2 modchips.. he was fined $17 000 and charged to 12 months probation..
I thought the law was as long as your using it for legit reasons it wasn't a problem... maybe it was changed?
just use the modchip....and all...but dont go and print out flyers and all that....i live in Canada...and my weekly paper...has an ad about the guy who does modchip and he did mine...and he has been advertising since Oct 2002....
Hey Mafia... s'up bro? That's my ad you're talking about. What a small world.
I read an article a year ago about a guy up in Ottawa who was charged with copyright infringement. Might be the same guy you mentioned, radish. It read as follows:

Ottawa man convicted for selling PlayStation 'mod chips'
Last Updated Tue, 23 Jul 2002 15:23:43
OTTAWA - An Ottawa man who sold chips that allowed Sony PlayStation units to play pirated games was fined $17,000 and sentenced to a year of probation last week.
Robert Garby, 38, pleaded guilty to two counts of copyright infringement and four counts of selling unauthorized computer equipment.
He was charged after an RCMP investigation found he was selling a line of 413 pirated video games and charging $30 to install "mod chips" in Sony PlayStation video game consoles.
The chips circumvented the console's copy protection measures, which ensure that only authorized discs can be played. Once installed, the chips allow the modified units to play illegally copied video game discs.
Garby sold the chips from his computer store, Kustum Komputers, which he ran from November 1999 to March 2001. He advertised the mod chip sales and installation service in local flyers.
Police estimated Garby grossed about $30,000 from the illegal business.
Sony applauded the conviction, the first for selling mod chips in Canada, calling it "precedent setting."
Garby said he didn't know he was committing a crime and would have never gotten involved in selling mod chips if he had known the law.
I read further on the matter later. All the RCMP could pin him with was the copyright infringement charges... for selling burnt games. The unathourized hardware charges were NOT for the modchips. The paper erred on that. Further, the bonehead sold burnt games FROM HIS STORE! Ummmm, hello??? Anyone home?
The issue here is two-fold... it IS legal in Canada to modify your console as you see fit, knowing full well that you void your warranty. And it IS legal to both publicly buy and sell those modchips. I've done the research, and feel comfortable running an ad to that effect. There are several canadian based websites for ordering those chips, for which I pay taxes on top.
Obviously though, I make no mention of games. I like my freedom.
Exacly what i thought.. me and my smart self tho went down to compucentre and asked if they were interested lol and the guy is like "Leave b4 i call th epolice on u".. at the time i wasnt too sure but thx for clairifying that for me.
