I want to mod my ps2 to play backups, and im just finally getting around to it now. I was wondering what would be the best or most effective and up to date method of doing it, as well as for a cheap price. Id like to avoid the swap magic, as i hear swapping the discs is insanely tedious to do, but will take it if i really need to. Would a mod chip be the best bet? and which one?

Modchips are always the best bet , if installed correctly they are the most productive way to playing back ups period. No Swapping crap , no losing Memory card crap ect. But do believe the PS2 Modchip soldering install is one of consoles hardest chip to install. I think you can get a solderless chip for about 80 bucks. But if you don't get the solderless chip be prepared to solder about 44 tiny points ;)
well honestly i do have a few memory cards at my disposal, this console was shared between myself, 2 brothers, and sister but none of them play it anymore. so if theres a way to do it by modding a memory card, id be fine with doing that. otherwise the soldering points isnt a big deal either. im not a very experienced solderer myself, but i have friends who are, as well as the patience to try and do it myself considering i do know how to do it properly if i need to. what are the card methods, or what chips would you suggest?
I've been out of the PS2 scene for a long, long, time, but if you have a way to get a file onto your memory card (gameshark, a retail copy of HDLoader, a PC adapter), a network adapter, a hard drive, and a PS1 game, then that will let you use HDLoader, which is how I used to do it. But like I said, that's been years ago.
Free McBoot Home
Read up on Free McBoot. If you can get it onto your memory card, it lets you launch homebrew apps and games from any connected devices. I use it to run my old SNES games. You can use it to boot Open PS2 Loader, that will allow you to load games from an internal hard drive, a USB drive or over a network. If you can't find a way to install it, there is an install service somewhere on this site and I'm sure somebody will be happy to do it for you.
Also, you can use Free McBoot and ESR (under PS2 Apps on that page). If you just burn out your backup to a DVD+R (after a quick patch), you can run it right off the DVD drive, like the original disc does. The trick is getting the thing installed on your memory card. I got this card below, which allows you install apps to it.

Google for that from Modchip CA.... FYI, the ESR + Free MCboot is a lot better than the functionality on the card... so install those apps on the Memor32 instead.
I think this memory card exploit only works on certain PS2s. I got the white slim one and it works fine. If yours is older than the slims, it *should* work... read up on those memory card apps and make sure they are compatible with your PS2 before you spend any money. Or like the previous poster said, you might find someone to put the apps on a card for you. Once they are there you are set... on the other hand, if a card goes wacky on you and needs to be reformated, you are back to square one... If you have the Memor32, you can always fix it (format, start over -- this card has PC->USB transfer).
purely for the sake of avoiding forking out $50+ would the standard 8MB cards work alright?
and since i assume i need a memory card adapter to get the files to my card from my pc, which one would you recommend? i saw one on amazon for about 10-15 bucks, but i cant post the link because of my account limitations here
Standard memory cards do work, they are actually preferred over most others. If you don't want to pay for a memory card adapter you can use the free install service offered on this site. The only thing you do is send your memory card to the person that will install it for you and include a way to send it back.Quote:

well i discovered i was also doing the disc swap wrong, i was just opening the tray and swapping the discs like that. but in the end, my ps2 no longer will read discs now at all. :/
