Hi all, im wondering what exactly are the laws against chipping/burning consoles and games in Canada (may be the same in the states)
My perspective (which I was told about) is that chipping/modding any console is prefectly legal and also backing up purchased games BUT the only thing illegal is selling backed up games.

    Am I correct?

If not can someone please lay the facts down on the topic.

    Thanks

Searcha round, there are many posts on this. And the truth is, the law is grey, and how grey it is depends on where you live. Some of the posts touch up on Canada i know for sure. Regardless of the law, the chances of a small time user will get in trouble is slim to none, the scale is just too large, so not to worry.

But thats about right, legal to backup one you own. Not illegal if you dont own it, and you dont have the right to sell the copy.

In Canada you are allowed to make 1 backup copy of and software, music, movie or game. But no where does the law state you have to show ownership of the original copy. This issue has really come to light with the peer to peer file sharing. It has been before the courts very recently and has been shot down. Just don't sell any copies and you are fine. Selling is a whole new can of worms.
