I think the laser on my PS2 version 1 needs replacement. I have a Matrix Infinity v1.3 mod. I have a burned game that I play from time to time. Sometimes it loads, sometimes it doesn't. The media I used was a Ritek G04 DVD-R, burned at 1X speed on a Pioneer DVR-105 using Recordnow Max 4.5.

My question is, which laser can I replace it with? KHS-400B or KHS-400C? I looked in ebay, and there's a few sellers there saying that only the KHS-400B will work with my version 1 PS2...and some said that the KHS-400C will also work with it. So which one should I get? When I replace the laser, will I be able to use DVD+R, DVD-RW, and DVD+RW media as well? Is this a pretty much straight forward part replacement in terms of difficulty?

    Thanks!

v1 ps2's come with the 400b in them, however some people say that the 400c will fit v1-4 and some say it will only retro-fit v4. The 400b will not read dvd+r or dvd-r 99.9% of the time and the 400c will. I'm sorry I can't give you a better answer, but if you can use the 400c, I would. Especially if you plan on using burned dvd's.

So most likely I have the 400B on my PS2 V1? But I'm able to read DVD-R's though...but you said the 400B won't read DVD-R's 99.9% of the time.

So has anyone with a V1 replaced their original 400B laser with a 400C laser? Can the 400C laser read DVD-RW and DVD+RW?

The 400c is an all around better laser. Personally the 400b I had in my v4 would never read burned dvd's. I'd say IF the 400c will work in yours (like I said I'm not 100% sure) I'd use that, but if you want to be safe and make sure you don't waste your money get the 400b.
