Laser Or Media? CD Skippage.

Ahhh it finally happened to me. Annoying CD Skippage.

I have a very new modded PS2, and on 1 game it badly skips on fmv's sequences and cd tracks. Although I havnt noticed any problems with any other cd game at all.

IM trying to tell whether its a crappy media problem or the laser , im kinda hoping its media as the ps2 is new and I dont feel like a heavy calibration session at all!

Thing is though when it first happened the cd was scratched so I belived it was that, So I copied the scratched disk onto different media, still skipping, then I burnt a new image of the cd onto same media as before and still skipping. So its had 2 (potentially crappy) media tested with it. Thing is it played perfectly for a week, but it is heavy with the FMV, the menu has one running in the back ground so you cant really select any game options because of the skipping.

But then other games with same media have no probs at all. so Im confused.

That's too specific (one game only) to be the laser. I'd still go with the media. Actually, I think it's the burn.

What prog are you using for burning? Tell ya why I ask... sounds to me like you've selected "ignore read errors", and you've been unable to get a clean read from the first disc, which was so badly scratched. I've used DiscJuggler in the past, and if it encounters a read error, it inserts a dummy patch (all 0's) until it find the next readable sector. My suggestion... get a brand new master of this game, not a copy of a scratched copy.

Hmm sounds extreemly possible , although I played it a couple of times with no probs, its just kinda started now. I must admit I dont burn at 1X speeds, if that would be a factor (Normally 12x to be safe ish)

1X isn't necessary, though 4-8 works wonders. And Nero 6 is well-known to be a great burning app. How does it handle read errors? Does it abort the copy process completely? or can you set it to ignore read errors?

I'd still suggest getting a new master of the problematic game... just to rule out the media and laser as possible culprits.
