What version is your PS2? I believe if it's anything over a version 9 the independence exploit will not work, but I can't confirm this since I have a version 7. Sony removed the possibility of running the independence exploit some time ago, I'm just not sure when.
If you have a modded ps2 that can run backups, then you have a few options to get the exploit onto your MC. Personally, I would just run a cd with uLaunchELF on it, then use it to copy over the exploit (BOOT.ELF file) to the following location on your Memory Card "mc0:/BOOT/BOOT.ELF". Then depending on what mod-chip you have, you can set it to boot to DEV1 (memory card). Of course, the only problem is you would need to learn how to use uLaunchELF, but it's not that difficult. If you need the ISO of uLaunchELF, you can use the one I made here.
You could also use the Independence Compiler to make an ISO (burned on a CD) that will automatically copy the BOOT.ELF over to your MC for you.
SMS is the best media player available for the PS2, which can be run off your Memory Card. It does allow you to play different types of video files streamed from your PC, but you need a program like RadHostClient or ps2client (works with PS2 AutoClient) that runs off your PC. There is also a program called PS2Client Loader, but I haven't played around with it yet (ps2client revision 2 can be found there also).
EDIT: If your mod-chip doesn't allow booting to DEV1 (memory card) or DEV2 (hard drive), then you can still boot the exploit using a PS1 disc. Information about that procedure here, as well as background information on how the exploit works.
