Hello, I'm thinknig of buying a PS2 and was wondering if you guys can let me know which model (SCPH) to get that is easy to mod chip, most stable and can you point me to the thread on how to backup your disks. Any models to stay away from? Aparently there are mod chips that you don't need to solder anything (I'm used to PS1 )
    Thanks

You should've posted this in the modchip section.

v7 is the best. They have the best laser and overall system stability is good. Your second choice would be a v5. Stay away from v12 and v13, also known as the slim PS2s, they are the worst damn pieces of sh*t in the world.

Here's a good tutorial on backing up your discs: http://members.aol.com/willityl5/madmax.htm

The no-soldier modchips for the PS2s have known to damage the motherboard. If you don't know how to soldier just buy a pre-modded system with either a Matrix Infinity or a CrystalChip. Do not go for cheap modchips, because they are usually clones. Clones don't allow you to upgrade the firmware, so if you buy them you have to stick with what you got. Ask the people in the modchip thread before buying from a seller to makes sure you're not getting a clone. Read some threads in the modchip forum to decide on which modchip to get.

Ok, thanks for the info. How do I tell if it's v7?

So SCPH-39001 or SCPH-300001 is good or no good?

might I ask what exactly is wrong with the slim PSTwo? Is it bad in the sense for modding only or is it overall bad?

as far as i read it

matrix and crystal are pretty much the same, they both offer the same kind of things, and features

hacked crystal firmware allows you to go online without patching the disc (i dont believe the official software allows this)

dms4 - well most people here dont like dms, i dont know, but they look like very big chips, which will make it harder to solder
and dont neccisarily offer the same performance as a matrix or a crystal

i use a o2 - but thats pal only atm, and ure prolly best to stick to a better known chip

from everything ive read on this forum, crystal and matrix are pretty much 1:1 except some people think crystals information giving skills are lacking

I'm convinced to get a matrix infinity (in a silver pstwo)

these two sites are the best prices:

    http://www.1ehz0.de/
    http://www.gamefreax.com/

for europe that is, any opinions on these shops?
does someone know other stores in europe that have comparable prices?
I'd like to get an extra controller and mc too so...

    thx in advance
