Can a ps2 be modded to use a cheaper, easier to find laser pickup?
Every day it's getting harder to get one, and it tends to get worse.
Can somehow the circuit be modified?
Maybe try to using a slim ps2 laser on a fat...
What defines the laser pickup that must be used?
Are there anyone thats interchangeable?
you cab play games stored on your pc via a network cable using OPENPS2LOADER instead , its been a year since i used any discs to play games
I know I can play games through net/usb/hdd.
This is why I told it may sound as a stupid question...
I'm just missing the DVD and CD playing compatibility.
I also know I can play avi and mp3...
Maybe this would be sort of a "challenge" mod.
I think some information I'm looking for is scarce, specially to a non-engineer guy like me.
I also think "The impossible is just a little bit time consuming", with time and the right knowledge we can do almost anything!
Please, don't take it as a rude answer as it may sound...
Maybe it's just sort of substitute some electronic parts, who knows!

I definitely think it's one of those "it's time consuming, but possible" scenarios, but I don't think you're going to find anybody willing to tackle the task of figuring it out. I don't know much, but I'm sure it would take quite a bit of poking around in the system, as well as some modified software/firmware to run it. Being that the PS2 is over 10 years old, you're most likely not going to find somebody willing to take on the project. I wish you the best of luck, but my advice would be either buy a new laser, or a new PS2.Quote:

I think that the lasers are proprietary, since they seem to only be found in Playstation 2 consoles.
In the first place, even some PS2s cannot use the lasers from other units (E.g. there is no way for my SCPH-10000 with a KHS-400A to use the HD7 laser from my SCPH-39006 console), so there is no such thing as a "all-PS2-model" compatible laser to begin with.
(Inter-console-compatible lasers will probably be even less likely to exist!)
Otherwise, I don't see why we (especially us users of older consoles that sport the KHS-400A laser) have a shortage of Lasers in some regions.
What about those 3rd party compatibles (E.g. KHS-400H, KHS-400Q and KHS-400W lasers)? They seem to come cheap and might work better than some of the Sony and Sanyo lasers.
I just want to try this because here where I live a new khs400x laser costs around $160,00 or more.
I just don't know, but if I could buy cheap ones over the internet I would sure make a small stock for my personal use.
I still neet to learn how to install these, since I got a supposed working one and had no success installing it on my old fat ps2.
I had looked at a lot of tutorials over the web, and still can't suceed, for this I think this laser is defective, or I am just too dumb to do the work!
What is that new laser's exact model? What was your console's original laser's model?.
If your console had a KHS-400C laser, it can only be replaced with a KHS-400B/C.
If your console had a KHS-400R or HD7 laser, it must be replaced with a KHS-400R or HD7 laser.
Unless... you use lense changer to reconfigure your console to use the other type of laser (E.g. reconfigure your console that came with a KHS-400R laser to use a KHS-400C). BUT: That only works for consoles >= v5!

(So consoles older than v5 do not support HD7 lasers? hmm...)
If you cannot get the laser to work, your console might have a blown/faulty BA (SCPH-1x000 and SCPH-3xxxx consoles) or LA (SCPH-5xxxx consoles) chip... otherwise, the laser is really faulty.
Over time you have to adjust the laser since it gets worn from long term usage.
Also helps to clean the laser with a cotton swab with rubbing alcohol for better read
