Dont worry - I am a pro - and I still spent 30 minutes fixing a PS1 laser sled when in the end all it needed was a wipe to get rid of a dirty great big finger print on the lens!

Thank god the PS2 is enclosed... although it does mean you have to void the warrant to clean the lens...

uhh, no you dont. that would mean you had to disassemble a car stereo to clean the laser for the cd player, or a set top dvd player to clean that laser. thats why they make drive cleaning discs, and im sure sony expects you to use one of those, instead of crack the case open.

the trouble with the cleaning disc's it if it picks a bit of grit up on the way round it scratch's hell out of the lense nothing like doing the nitty gritty and doing it right.

not just scratches - but also a poor job - especially compared to opening her up and making sure that the right areas are clean. nothing like a visual inspection.

Also a lot of those auto cleaning devices do more damage than good - tape video head cleaning tapes - they can kill your heads.

unless you dump sand in the thing, you dont need to open up a drive to get some dust off of a laser. it's not like you need rubbing alcohol to remove fingerprints or something, because you shouldnt be opening the drive. and i've used cleaning discs in plenty of optical drives, and a few vcr headcleaer tapes over the years, without damaging any equipment.

The cleaning discs do no harm. In fact someone on here was having a problem with his laser so he cleaned it with using the q-tip method but he still had probs. I told him to get a cleaning disc so he did and his ps2 is working 100% now. I use mine in my ps2, dvd players, and computer drives all the time. All runnin as good as the day I bought them.

I use cleaning disc on both ps2 and they did work but fo like a week...I found like bunch of crap after openning them ps2...clean them up and wipe the laser len...it actually look shinier...I was doubting it but it sure prove me wrong...that little wipe does the trick...cleaning disc only clean the laser...there are still dust trap in the ps2...

My problem was that My ps2 was on the floor all the time so dust and everything else got in...now...I keep in higher...above the floor now...like a feet or two....

well yea, you shouldnt be using your ps2 in a place where a bunch of dust, or something like cigarette smoke is gonna get in it. that's just a given. otherwise, cleaning discs will do the job.

The other problem with cleaning disks is that they only deal with dust on the lens - and they deal with it by picking it up and spitting it at the walls of the drive at high speed... unless they use damp bristles (i.e. alcohol wetted)

it will eventually fall back in...

they also do not clean the roof of the drive or the sides which can drop dust back on the lens happily after every cleaning disk attempt.
