I am asking this as i cannot for the life of me think of the right keywords to search for it. Just wanna know how the unmodded ps2 knows whether or not the disk you're putting in is legal or not.

I am asking this as i cannot for the life of me think of the right keywords to search for it. Just wanna know how the unmodded ps2 knows whether or not the disk you're putting in is legal or not.
thats not distinguishing between media, thats just a matter of the copy protection check.
distinguishing between media would be a dvd game, cd game, dvd movie, etc.
oh, ok, thx for clearing it up. i also have a follow on question. where on the game cd is the copy protection located?
(and mebbe a link to how and why a modchip works)
ps: (what i really wanna know is why can't you burn elf files to cdr and boot 'em)
The first part of a disc is errors, corrupt. The os2 checks to see if that part is corrupt in the correct way, and then will it allow it to boot. A computer will automaticaly try to correct the corrupt parts of the disc and will not write them. Hence why a copy of a game wont work.
so what you are saying is if you can force the computer to write the corrupt sectors in the right way, a normal cdr can be made to boot on a ps2?
Bad sectors actually have nothing to do with the copy protection, this is a common myth. Get a PS2 original CD/DVD and attempt to make a 1:1 copy of it - the copying software will not report any bad sectors (unless you are trying to copy an un-licensed PS2 bootable disc).
Its not so much what the copy protection data is, but how and where it is stored on the media. You cannot properly read the data with standard hardware (ie: normal PC cdrom/dvdrom drives). Since you cannot read it, you cannot duplicate it.
true, as it is writen further inside, so to correct what i said , its not that it tries to fix it, it cannot physically see that it even exists.
wow... so thats why. it explains a lot.time to get a $2million dvdwriter
