How to play online via "Internet Connection Sharing"
How to play online via "Internet Connection Sharing" –
I'm trying to play a game online via "Internet Connection Sharing"
my setup right now:
usb wifi adapter on my PC
crossover cable connected from the network port on the network adapter to the ethernet port on the computer
a router in another room
I think it's the internet connection sharing i need to enable.
I tried connecting with an online game and it says the connection has timed out,
I set the IP/DNS address to auto, though I'm thinkin i need to do those manually ?
Thanks, any help would be appreciated.
the game i wanna go online with still has its server up, so it shouldn't be that
I remember doing it a while back with my friends laptop and a crossover. I think it has something to do with going into the network connections in windows and highlighting both the wifi and the network connection, right click, and bridge connections. Should be something like that.
what version OS are you running?
you could just setup a new network. use the network config wizard. be sure to set your primary connection so its the one to the internet. then after you select the primary connection it will ask you which other connections you wanna bridge.
another important question is, what kind of connection do you have? i have a wireless 3g data card and its a nightmare to configure
oh man, i followed status18's advice,
and now when i do a connection test in the game, it says that its successful
but when i try to connect to the internet for real, it says the network cable is not connected ?
i'm running windows xp sp3
i have a netgear wifi adapter (wna 1100 wireless-n)
not sure about the router, i live in an apartment and the router belongs to my landlord.
oh by the way this might help, I'm using OPL HDD to run the game.
I don't have my disc copy with me at the moment.
Theres a proxy server option in the game, just pointing that out, not sure what that is.
good job. what is the ip and subnet of the devices? they all need to be on the same subnet xD
be sure there on the same network.
does your wifi card read the wireless routers signal?
i'm not quite sure what your talking about, haha
but in the ps2 network configuration i set the ip and dns to auto, and the PPPOE to not required.
my usb wifi adapter reads the routers signal i guess ? i'm not really sure about that one either.
thanks for helping me out so far
how do i set the ip/subnet and make sure they're on the same network ?
ok from the ps2 to the computer. i would set up an easy ip configuration. like make the ps2 192.168.0.3 and make the pc ip 192.168.0.2. be sure that both subnet masks are 255.255.255.0
see if this will allow you to connect to local port 21 (via ftp) on the ps2. if it does then move on to the wifi card. when you connect the wifi card to the computer, it should register the wireless router (your landlords). you should be able to connect to it via dhcp. when you connect to it, go into your wifi card properties and see what the defaul gateway is, you will want to set the default gateway of the ps2 to the same ip as the wireless router, lol
because what your trying to do is use your PC as a layer 3 device, which it is quite capable of. the best way to do it, is trial and error. you want the pc and the ps2 to "communicate" back and forth. then you leave the wifi card default gateway blank and then the connection will look for the next possible path to the internet (landlords router) i hope this makes sense, cause it sure as hell dont to me. i will re read this tommorow and probly come up with a better solution.
if you would use network setup wizard it would do this automatically. when it ask you what is your primary connection, yu would choose the wifi card, and then it will ask you something like which connection do you want to share with, you would ofcourse pick the WIRED LAN connection of the computer. this will set everything up for you.
can you connect to the internet with the pc right now? what your trying to do is put the devices on the same network so they can communicate
anyone please correct me if im wrong, i am tired and thoughts are starting to run together in my head -_-
how do i go about setting up an ip configuration ?
and what is dhcp ?
Ok, i assume you are using windows? which version?

from that you should see a box with something like auto obtain ip then there should be a checkbox for "use this ip"or words to that effect. when ticked the ip,subnetmask should now be able to be put in. use the numbers from the previous post. but the first 3 sets of numbers must be the same on PS2 and PC and the 4th different ie 2 for one and 3 for the other.
click all the close/apply to back out.... this should get the PS2 and the PC talking.
you need to then set up internet connection sharing on the wireless adaptor....
dhcp=Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. its basically what runs on your router and hands out ip addresses in the specified range to the computers that hook up to it either wired or wireless....
