Just as it say's, how does a modchip actually work? What does it do to the machines? Does it trick it somehow into thinking that they are original games?

Just What Is A ModChip?
The Mod Chip will allow your console to play imported games from other countries and also backups (aka copies, gold's, pirates) with perfect sound, video and no other problems. The law in most countries will allow the purchaser of any original game to be backed-up to protect against loss due to or damage of the original. However, your console has a protection scheme that essentially removes the ability to use copies. The Mod Chip will bypass this protection and enable the use of backups and imports from other countries. Anyone who purchases the Mod Chip must be aware that the use of pirate software is illegal and they must own the original game before copying a disc or using a copied disc.
Hi:
The wey modchips works...
Well, Ill explain it basicly because I dont now much, but essentially is this.
Nowadays, modchips like Messiah 2, Matrix MXL, DMS3 and others do this.
They monitor the Bios Bus (Byte) to recognize what version is your ps2
Then, they get used of that bus and change the information when the ps2 is loading the data from the Bios to Ram Memory. So, your chip has patched the code while its been copyng to ram and the protections are totally skipped because the ps2 never read again the Bios Chip, only when you turn your ps2 on
For reasons that I dont know, modchips also use the CD/DVD controller bus for booting DVD ps2 games. So the data transfered to the CPU is changed too. I think it was easier to change the reading information than patching a lot of Bios Code in RAM.
For other reasons that I dont also know, the DVD bus must not be altered, or altered in other way when you use a ps1, DVD movie, audio cd, so you need to tell the chip what are you going to use, so a boot-method was implemented.
Please, if somebody knows, report errors to this explanation, ill be grateful.
Good Luck!
Sorry for my bad English
