i'm in the process of moving, and through all the clutter and garbage in my closet i dug out my old dreamcast and the giant folder of game backups from my high school days of l33t haxor-ing.

hours and hours of awesome fighting games and skies of arcadia later, i got to thinking - first of all, i need to finish packing up all this crap. second of all, i need to find a way to play all the cool, obscure, and exorbitantly expensive sega saturn and psx games i've always read about. unfortunately, since my computer is an aging, loud dinosaur and i'm the kind of guy that likes to play video games in bed on my TV, emulation is out of the question.

fortunately i can buy a pre-modded saturn with RAM cart and such for about 130 bucks, which isn't bad. unfortunately, buying a pre-modded ps2 seems like kind of a ripoff, considering all of the various swap and softmod options available.

so my question is: which one is best suited for playing PSX backup discs? for either a ps2 fat or slim? there's all these things like swap magic and breaker pro and free mcboot and it's all really confusing, since i've done a lot of reading and it doesn't seem like there's any one simple solution that everyone uses. everyone seems to use their own preferred method for booting psx backups.

i just wanna play the recently translated policenauts, guys!

As long as you have a memory card & some PS2 games you can soft-mod any PS2. I think that's the cheapest way. You'll need to make yourself a slide-tool ofcourse. Then you'll be able to play both PS1 & PS2 backups.

If you are just wanting to play PS1 backups then you can just do a swap with one real PS1 CD on the disclaimer screen.

my only concern with that method is that i'm swapping the discs out while they're still spinning, slowly killing the laser and the motor.

On my V14 ps2 slim SCPH 75001 I use fmcb 1.8 + uLe combo to play ps1 backups.
This method utilizes uLe's 'Disc on' feature

I also use Breaker Pro disc, which I had before fmcb

The Breaker Pro disc also works on my V18 SCPH 90001. I can't use the fmcb 1.8 method on this PS2 as the date code was past 8c March 2008

If you were to buy a FAT PS2 to play PS1 backups, you would need to make sure its V9 or higher
With a V9, you can use fmcb 1.8 and uLe to play backups

With V9 or higher FAT PS2, you can also use what is called the psxlauncher.elf to play the PS1 backups. You would still need a method such as fmcb 1.8 or swap magic to be able to launch the ELF files

    Its really not too confusing.
fmcb 1.8 once installed to a memory card, will allow you too launch any application
There are a quite a few methods too install, or have a free volunteer install it for you

Swap Magic is a retail pressed disc that allows you to play backups or launch ELF files via USB or Memory card.

Breaker Pro also is a retail pressed disc allowing you too play PS1 backups only on a PS2.

you should get a ps2 slim with a model number of scph-77001 because if u modify the door switches so it can be opened while running. u can find the tutorial video on youtube. you should use freemcboot so u can turn the automatic disk start off so you can put a real playstaion disk in it, then you wait untill the disk stops spinning in the browser, then put your backup in. it thinks its a real game and theres no potentially harmful disk swapping because the laser and motor are off when you swap. note that when you buy the ps2 get a scph-77001 because the lense is far less likely to have issues reading a burned game. i have been using mine for this for a long time without harming my lense.
