The other day i was playing an original DVD in the ps2. Suddenly, the dvd froze in mid-movie and went back to the title menu. My wife put the ps2 on standby (held down the reset button until it turned red.) Since then, the unit will not play anything...no movies (original or backup) ps2 games (original or backup), ps1 originals or backups or cd-rs of any kind. As soon as you put in a disk from the browser screen the screen says "Reading Disc" for about a second and a half and then nothing else happens. Any suggestions as to what happened?

    Which version console? Which chip?

Do you know how to measure the lasers' coils? and the laser units' pots measurements?

Have you tried cleaning the eye yet?

Unless the DVD is another region, you dont need a modchip to play it. That goes for backup movies too. It sounds like some interference from your modchip that is causing it to freeze.

Most chips list "No DVD Movie freezing" as a feature, but the Magic chip doesnt.

His problem isn't just movies. Nothing plays. Not even originals. How could 'interference from the chip' do that?

I'd be looking at the laser. Do you know if the Romeo mod was done on your console? And find a tutorial on measuring your coils... good indicator whether the laser is good or not.

good question, hypersonic...i'll have to disable the chip and find out...as it is now, nothing seems to play at all

Orignals or backups or any kind. I was watching "The Three Amigos" the other day and it just froze and went to the title screen. My wife shut down the ps2 (put it on standby) and that was it. Since then, it loads nothing. It turns on and all..but reacts as though there is no disk in the tray. U turn on the unit, get the initial screen, and then get that one screen where you choose a browser or some other option (don't remember).

So I choose browser right, the unit will go to the next screen (browser screen) and shows that it recognizes a memory card in the dock. however, it does not recognize a disk in the unit. If I eject (while still on the browser screen) and then have the tray go back into the unit, the screen will say something to the effect like "Reading Disc". This lasts for about one second and then goes away...and then........nothing!

Normally, the unit reads the disk and then displays it on the screen...now nothing. I don't even know if it's actually reading or not. I hear nothing when i put my ear close to the unit. Strange...

So that's what happens, but I will try to disable the chip (have to remember how now) and then try it again. We'll see what happens, i guess.

Did you do the romeo mod? =/

If you can, you should try to remove the power wire from the modchip. If the modchip goes bad (which I've never heard of before, but the possibility exist) then you probably can't disable it.
