I read somewhere about getting your ps2 online without buying the online adapter. People with AOL problems came up with this i was just wondering if it will work also for people that don't use AOL.

I would just like to know if the steps i have below will work?

first buy a USB network adapter as shown here

    http://hardwarecentral.dealtime.com/...apter_USB100TX

second i would install another NIC in my computer and connect that NIC to the USB network Adapter plugged into the PS2's usb port

Instead of using a hub or router i'd like to know if a crossover cable from the NIC to the USB adapter will work instead.

    thanks for any input

if the computer was running some sort of ICS service, yes it would work.

but why get a usb network adapter that isnt supported properly by every game?

You still have to get your hands on the PS2 network setup disc though (I think) to get the PS2 configured for network use. Besides, the prices of the network adapter have dropped. The knockoff's can be nabbed for $15-$20, and the Sony's for $30-$40. They come with the bootable setup discs and they accept cat5 cable to whatever you need to connect to--PC's NIC, Router, switch, etc. Pretty straightforward install from what I've read. Using the USB/Ethernet converter to link to your PC will leave you hanging if it doesn't work--with an actual PS2 accessory you have some form of tech support to fall back on if it doesn't work for some reason. Just a thought or two....

If it ain't broke don't try to fix it! But, hell if you can tweak that bastard just a little bit more....hehehe.

most games have the ability to set up a network configuration file. the only thing the network adapter disc does that games cannot is register the network adapter.

from my experience, depending on what OS you are using, a crossover connection may not be the easiest way to do things. as mentioned, 3rd party network adapters, especially USB ones, are not guaranteed to work with every game. they should be avoided, if possible. but if you really want to do it that way, it should work with some games..
