I've got a Slim PS2, it's a few days old. during my first 45 minutes of game play I got a bunch of read errors, but they haven't came up ever again. Anyway I'm still a bit paranoid and thinking about taking it back. For the same price I could get an old verison PS2 with the network adapter. what would you guys suggest.
I am looking into modding it as well, if that should factor into my choice.
Thanks

RUN makr0 RUN!!
Go get a FAT ps2 because the slim will get on your nerves.
On the older model you can add a HDD in the new it is out of the question. Also for older models there is a way to install o modchip without burning the Laser. In the new version the laser is burned by itself(it does not require any assistance from the user).I cannot believe sony released such a poor quality console. Also If you get a V9-V11(Latest FAT versions) you can read DVD-RW discs. If you try that on V12 you will get a slim black toaster.(Now if you are interested in a cute looking sony gadget to cook your meals you may keep the slim one.I can quarantee you that if you mod it you have about 70% chance of seeing REAL SMOKE coming out of it)
P.S1:I am not joking about the smoke thing
P.S2:You may be one of the lucky guys that your version will not go down.Just in case remeber to do one thing every morning --->

Wow..mines doing much much better. To test it last night I left it on running MGS3. It gets warm but nowhere compared to my RCA DVD player. I got another PSTwo in box never been opened still so i'm trying to trigger the thing to stop working by loading multiple formats for about an hour each. Is this happening on only modded consoles? Mine has the back switch taped and a toggle switch on the front. Maybe if I throw it against the wall it will stop working. One thing is for sure..I like this console alot (mainly the look). I wonder if $ony will recall the system and allow people who's systems have stopped working to turn it in for a newer better model.

No it does not happen only in modded consoles. In unmoded it is more rare since the failure is caused by the not so good reflection on not-original medias. If you want to try it without modding (or opening it and mesuring the voltages) try througing in DVD-R movies. It does not need a mod to play them and they can burn the laser. Also try GTA(very heavy loading) or any other original media that is not so good in quality.(used,scratched,etc).Even if it passes the test when you decide to add a mod the possibility increases geometrically but then you would have lost the warranty.

wow...and I use to think a newer system design also mean they'll be fixing all the bug/cheap crap in the system...I guess this time, it's main purpose was to make it harder for peeps to chip it....
