I have a 16MB Max Memory card, and the original .hack series (I only tried Infection and Mutation, but it probably happens with Outbreak and Quarantine as well, since they're more like expansion packs than new games) will not create a new file on the card but will read/write an already-created file just fine. I also can confirm that the problems with MGS3 and Okami occur on the 16MB card as well.
edit: So far, Okami seems to work with an existing file, similar to my experience with .hack

Ex-Cyber, nice to see you on other forums
.
I just tried Okami with my 16mb Max Memory card and it saved fine. I have a v8 w/Crystal Chip 2.0. The 16mb Datel Max Memory card came from Walmart and has the Prod ID of "MAX MEM 16: DUS0109" below the UPC.

kingdom Hearts II backup plays fine on ps2 v7 with cc 1.2 firmware 29 but can't save game on datel MAX 64MB memory card installed. cc 29 needs to be updated to support Max memory card, thanks.

Datel has this in their support section for Max Memory:
Q: My memory card won?t work with Resident Evil 4/JAK X.
A: Unfortunately, there is a problem with some MAX Memory cards and a couple of games, namely Resident Evil 4 and Jak X. If you have had your card for less than a year, please contact us for a replacement. If it?s older than this, we?re afraid we cannot replace it, but you need an updated card to save these two games.
Looks like at least some of these compatibility problems are due to a bug in the cards themselves that was fixed at some point.
edit: I don't have the packaging for my card (which I bought a couple years ago IIRC so it's probably a buggy one) anymore, but the PCB has the following to identify it:
- An etched identifier "REF1644" at the top end of the parts side (this may be the same for fixed cards; if it was only a code change there would be no need for a new layout).
- The flash memory is a Samsung K9F2808U0CYCB0; there is also a "440" on it which is probably a datecode indicating that it was made in the 40th week of 2004, and another number "UPH801DCC" which I can't really make heads or tails of; might be a factory/line number or similar.
- An SSOP in the middle with the Datel logo and "0450467".
- The infamous "GATE CRASHER" chip, with the RawScience logo on it and no identifying numbers.

Man I wish I knew about this sooner then I could have simply returned mine. I got my Max Memory 64MB in august of 05.
The link to the source of that information is here. The date says 2/22/2006 so they are producing revisions of their cards.
I did hear on another forum that someone said that they reformatted their card and RE4 worked but I took that with a grain of salt. Maybe it's worth a shot. Any takers?

Yea, I would return mine, but I got it second-hand for a really good price, so I guess will have to live with it.

I was having problems with my 32 MB card when I first got it (uLE Forum Posts #3593 and #3595), then I formatted it with MC Killer and it's been fine ever since. Although, it did not fix the compatibility issue with Resident Evil 4. I was able to save on the card, but when I tried to load the save, it said the file was corrupted. I have no idea when this card was made, since there are no identifying numbers on it anywhere...
EDIT: So it looks like saving to my 32MB card works fine, but not restoring. When I transfer the non-working save from my 32MB to my 8MB card, and then try to load it from slot 1, it works (minus the missing icon.sys file I had to manually copy into the RE4 System Data folder). When I try to restore the save from my 32MB card, it says "Failed to load game data", and on a second attempt it will add on "This data may be corrupted."
