Games load but... not for awhile

I have a v6 ps2 that when you stick in any disk it spins short five times then just idles for about 45-60 seconds then finaly recognizes the disc... i've searched around but have found no definate reason why this happens I don't thinks it's the laser going out because the ps2 disc drive should still be spinning and trying to read it right?? IDK anyone with some suggestions would be great because this sucks having to wait so long for it to load the disc and i can't even just have the ps2 boot a game right up... meh... thanks

it sounds like a laser going bad. or just dirty lens.
