Exactly why is it? –
04-05-2003,12:01 AM
I know how modchips supposedly work (inject the SCEx signal into the ps2 while the disc is detected so the game boots), and I also know how the swaptrick works (takes the signal from another game, and uses it to boot the backup). If a game is copied exactly RAW, block for block, why exactly is it that the ps2 doesn't boot it?? Is there a way for the ps2 to check that its a DVD-R and not a DVD-ROM? I've never really understood this... even for the xbox...... if the protection is only that it checks if the code is signed, wouldn't copying a retail game still have signed code?? Unless the signature is on the second layer that cannot be recorded by any home DVD-R burner so far?
Thanks for the answers, and make this a long one

I don't have the answer, but I do got another question while were on the subject since your talking about RAW copying....I've used CloneCD for my psx games, and it worked fine... I tried to copy a couple of ps2 games using CloneCD-They copied fine, but won't work! Wondering why that was? Anyways, I personally use Nero so it's no biggie, but theres a few games that sometimes will have errors, and CloneCD won't work for me.

That actually wasn't on the lines of the question I had asked. I was inquiring about what exactly the modchips did, and why they needed to do this in order to play a game backup. I so far want to know why making an exact copy of a disk with a CD/DVD burner will not copy it enough for the console to think it is an original disk and play it. The only thing I could think of is that DVD-ROMs are pressed in disc pressers, and DVD-Rs are burned using home burners, so the consoles are made to be only compatible with running ROM disks, and not -Rs. Is this a correct assumption? I think that would be pretty freakn awsome if someone actually found a way (unlike that old fake guide lol) to self-boot ps2 games. The first step would be finding out what needs to be done for it to boot without a chip (or swap). Although even if a way was found, 80min rips wouldn't be played this way because they are still larger than the standard size for CD-Disk media.
I know theres gotta be someone that knows alot about this subject, please share your knowlege here!!
Thanks

If I remember correctly.... (and I probably don't so someone correct me where I go wrong please)
The original PSX games etc are pressed with sectors that cannot be reproduced by a CD burner. If you have access to a CD pressor and know how to make up a correct PSX/PS2 cd you could make it boot on an unmodified console

you're right. they are called "bad sectors"

ps2 is different though....
you'll have to get ent or sjeep to elaborate on that

If anyone would, I would like an elaborate explanation like D0od mentioned... is there a document, or has one never been made yet? If it has, please post it here, if it hasn't then heres your chance to make one!
hehe
thanks again

This is really an interesting question, but it has to be more complex than the difference between cd burners and cd pressers because HK silvers are pressed reproductions but they do not self boot.

The HK silvers will boot on an unchipped console as long as they are pressed correctly, you must make a valid PSX/PS2 disc as well as pressing the CD
