dvd writers and media –
05-03-2004,04:55 PM
Hi everyone, im wondering what DVD writers and dvdr disks you guys are using which have given you great results. You may also mention any writers and media that have given you poor results so I can stay away from them. Im in the process right now of purchasing both, hopefully a writer that won't hit a huge dent in my wallet and give me great results (if that makes sence)
Thanks

Shouldnt this be in Off Topic? Oh well ...
Stick with a Pioneer 107 (or A07), and Ritek Media, with the 8x4all hack from dvd-recordable.org you can burn on G04's @ 8x (for ps2 you should stick to 2x apparantly, although I have never had any trouble @ 4x on ps2)
Hope that helps.
Jay

I just finally bought a DVD writer and it's the same combo as already mentioned. Pioneer 107D and Ritek G04's. DVD writers are so cheap right now it wold be a shame to get something inferior for the matter of a few $$. Pioneer (I think) has proven itself on the A03-A07 line be a good burner. I cheaped out on my first CD writer and it caused me 18 months of grief before I threw it away (An LG coincidently). You could always try to find an end of the line A06 or used A05 of something if you really have to pinch the pennies.
An not that I'm any expert or anything but I would stay away from any media that is labeled Memorex.

Pioneers are so cheap now it would be silly to look @ anything else apart from one (unless you were to buy a Plextor) ...
In UK you can get a 107 for £68 and 25 G04's for £11!

thanks guys..
I have searched ebay and found an auction selling a used
Pioneer DVR-106 A06 4X DVD-R DVD-RW CD-R CD-RW
It's at around $30 U.S right now and it's ending in a day. Is this writer worth over 50 U.S plus around 15-20 U.S on shipping?
Locally here the A07 brand new is going for $137 CDN which is like around $100 U.S. Is there much of a difference between the two models? I can buy some dvdr's with the cash saved

I've read the 106 supports more media types then the 107 but the 107 supports 8x writing and has already been demonstrate by Pioneer to have the ability to burn dual layer DVD's with the right firmware. If the price of the 106 on Ebay gets close to a new 107 then it's a no brainer. I just got the black faced 107 (new) for $138 Cdn$

That is a RUMOR and is not confirmed. There has been no official mention of any firmware updates to allow dual-layer burning. In fact, the -DL burners aren't even expected until next year. Sony will, however, be releasing a +DL burner in the next month. I've already pre-ordered one for only $199. I can't believe how much the prices have dropped in the course of just a year or so. I hate the + format, but that's all that will be available for a while.
