They are both using Sanyo HD7's.. Same laser units as v7.. The sony lasers would burn out to quickly or loose correct calibration.. The sanyo's are the good ones..

Typical of $ony to do that.. We are on our 10th revision of the PS2 and all I see different is the DVD driver, board size and model #? Where is the BIG improvement.. Faster BOOT time.. Not faster game loading, just booting.. lol.. Oh yeah.. And no more IEEE 1394 port..

Yeh you would think sonys laser would be the best since they sell laptops and desktops and they have cd and dvd drives. It makes you wonder about their dvd players and pc's doesent it ?

uhhh, why are they "$ony" for releasing newer revisions of a console? they arent the only company to do that with electronics you know. the biggest reason is probably minor cuts in manufacturing costs or time. it's not like a new version of a ps2 means you need to go out and buy it to play the latest ps2 games. and if they can cut costs enough, they can eventually drop the price as the compeition does with less reluctancy, which is good for consumers in the end.

most board revision's are bug upgrade's to cure common fault's just like some tv manufacture's release upgrade kit's for buggy electronics, plus as prisoner says cost cutting is a big involvement aswell.

as for sony's other optical drive's they are all shit from the hifi xb series to the sony dru dvdwriter drive's they are all crud
