If not, could you guys refer me to a mod chip that would be best? My girlfriend is wanting me to mod her PS2 as I did my PS3, but I have no prior knowledge of how this process works. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have a look on the back of the PS2slim. near the model sticker should be a small square sticker with the date code. if that is 8b or less then yes FMCB will boot directly on this console. if it is 8c then its a bit of pot luck as this was the quarter that SONY changed the bios from 2.2 to 2.3 and FMCB wont directly boot. for these models you can still get a copy of Swapmagic 3.6 or swapmagic coder 3.8 and use that to boot into uLE and then start homebrew . anything 8d or greater then FMCB wont boot and you need either a chip or the swapmagic methods.
Well, the PS2 softmods work quite differently from the PS3 custom firmwares, so the only thing they might have in common is that a PS2 backwards compatible PS3 might use some of the same homebrew software as a PS2 console, such as "Open PS2 Loader" etc. But the softmod boot methods are entirely different.
Fortunately the answer to the question in your thread title is "YES !".
FMCB will work on all consoles of the SCPH-770xx models. (where xx are 2 digits that denote the region, with 01 meaning USA/Canada)
@spud42:
I think you must have missed the "SCPH-77001" part of the thread title.
Surely you know that it is only the SCPH-900xx model for which the datecode relates to FMCB compatibility.
