I double (triple ;-) checked power, the chip has 3.3v (actually reads 3.4 or so), all connections were double checked, the eject connection is fine.

It fires up and plays PS2 games fine, but if I insert a backup copy or a DMS3 upgrade CD it simply reports "Insert PS2 CD.." error.

Are there any more comprehensive FAQ's on toubleshooting this? It's my first PS2 chip install, but I have years of experience soldering and building electronic devices..and such..

I've heard something about possibly a bad batch, I just purchased this from easybuy...

thanks for any tips...at least I didn't end up with blank screen ;-)

Be nice to know which model it is. Make sure all the wires are flat on the board and wires D and E don't cross. You may want to do the ground wire wrapping for D and E so that there's no crosstalk.

    Oh, sorry.. PS2 V7, DMS3.. just got it I from EasyBuy I think it's a 1.2?

I'll double check D and E.. I presume by 'ground wire wrapping' you mean solder a long wire to the ground (same as the chip) and wrap it around d and e? Space wraps about 1/4" or so?

    Thanks.

Sorry, missed your comment about the Bad batch. It's highly unlikely you received one. Those were mostly sold through Divineo and then were all returned to the DMS team for exchanges.

    You'll either have a green PCB (v1.0) or a blue PCB (v2.0). The 2.0s never had a bad batch....only the early 1.0s.

Anyways, back to your recent comment...Ground Wire wrapping, is where you wrap a wire around D and E individually, with both ends grounded on the board (usually the big square silver pads or Solder). Space wraps of 1/4" is fine.

I found that the D and E wires were actually switched..oops.. that'd bad. Fixed it, and successfully booted a game, then booted the upgrade disk which worked fine and upgraded to v1.2.

I started re-assembling and found at one point have some shorting when tightening the screws, traced that down to a small blob of melt glue on the top of the DMS3,which pushed it down...removed that and the PS2 booted fine, but it can't read any disks now, not originals, backups on DVD or the CD upgrade disk. I just get the usual PS2 menu. If I try to browse it tries to read the CD (I re-set all the CD connections, it's spinning up and the head is moving..doing its thing) and then I get a disk read error.

quadruple checked power, good.. I remove the + on the chip to see if it would then boot an original disk, no dice but I have no idea if this would work under normal circumstances to 'disable' the chip what with all the other wires.

I was very careful about not knocking it around so I'm pretty sure I didn't mess up the head alignment or anything. It does show PS2 in the upper left of the screen, so I think it recognizes the disk as a PS2 disk. I cleaned the laser as well.

I searched here for disk read error information, and everything seems to be related to unable to read DVD movies.. or backups and the like...

Thanks again for the help, this is starting to be a pain in my backside ;-)

hope I didn't fubar my PS2.. but I gnew the job was dangerous when I took it.

edit: picked up another PS2 and swapped the DVD drive, definately not the problem ;-)
