    Long story short: Ebay..8meg card..real thing..10 bucks..
came from hong kong..looked 100% real even packaging was flawless...the card compares to a real one perfectly..

Worked great for a long time, would never know the difference until months later when i booted up a resident evil game, the card couldnt be found..but i put in a really legitimate one (yes, i checked the chip), and it found it.

So on a hunch, i opened the card up..yup..look at the picture. Says "Hynix" plus theres the all too familiar black blob that the bootleggers used on GBA carts.

The card aint bad, it works with my exploit and ule reads it and pretty much everything else.

The guy on ebay, eh, i can care less. I got what i paid for. It works now on the resident evil game..most of the time.

He has a lot of good deals though, like a 4gb psp memory stick for like 35 bucks, lol. I wont spam his username obviously.

So, does Hynix has a big history in the underworld of counterfeiting over in asia or something?

You got pretty lucky. A lot of the eBay fake crap actually doesn't do what it says. I highly recommend you to not order a flash card from that guy, or from eBay in general.

Thanks, im way ahead of you there. Im not even into psp, so i dont give a crap.

Yeah, apparently hynix chips are used for counterfeiting..i imagine theyre being used for knock-off modchips too. Some assface somewhere said hynix was a legal affiliate.

The memory card still works for everything, havent even tried the resident evil game after that.

Im just steamed that i thought i was getting a real ps2 card, the package looked identical to the ones in stores but costed less then half.

Hynix is a real memory manufacturer and they make pretty good chips too. You simply got ripped off or weren't careful with getting stuff via ebay.

So, does Hynix has a big history in the underworld of counterfeiting over in asia or something?
Hynix is a memory manufacturer (one of the major DRAM manufacturers, in fact) formed from the merger of the former Hyundai and LG chipmaking divisions. The actual manufacturers of these counterfeits probably just use Hynix chips because they are cheap and/or readily available in the area(s) where the cards are being made.

Just out of curiosity, what flash chips are used in genuine Sony cards?

Also, isn't RE4 one of the games that doesn't work with Datel's older Max Memory cards? I get the feeling that someone dumped or leaked Raw Science's "Gate Crasher" program, and the bootleggers are replicating that design with Sony packaging...

I am still not sure the card you have is a fake, as the "black blob", as you call it might just be the "Magic Gate" Decyphering circuit.

Remember all PS2 are made in China now, so why not the Memory in Korea as they make Ram for lots of PC's even the one I am typing on.

Also , although I don't have an original PS2 Memory card to open up for you now, but I have had them corrupt saves on me.

It got the better of me and I opened what I believe is a genuine Sony MC ,
The flash chip is a Toshiba TC58V64BTG made in Taiwan and the Magic Gate / Conversion Chip is a CXD3740R. < Sony I guess with that Naming ;-)

It says "SCPH-10020 Made In China" on the back.

Oh yeah and no "black blob"

Actually that copied memory card isn't too bad. It's better than datel memory cards as it behaves much, much closer to the real thing. That memory card has something interesting about it. Since all copies of it have the same serial number on the controller chip, if you install a DVD driver update on your pirated MC, copy it with uLAUNCHELF and mail me them, I can copy them back to my pirate MC identical to yours and it will work just fine. (I have two of that memory card) and funny enough, mine didn't fail yet. I'll try them with RE4 to see what happens. I bought the pirate cards just out of curiosity and turned out they're very interesting, technically.

A comment about the MC case which can help to identify counterfeits without opening them:

Have a good look at the case, you will notice that the counterfeit card is smoother than the real one, the color is also darker. The original one has a grayish black tone and the copies have a smooth black tone.

The ink with the "8MB MEMORY CARD" can be easily scratched out and on the real thing it's like if it was melted in the plastic.

The back sticker on a fake card had the number "03-01 3-966-459-03 (13)" in the back. It was probably copied from a real card from 2003.
My real one has just "05-01" and the color of the gray ink sticker is darker on the fake MC.

If you see them in a shop ths could help you on figure out if it's a fake. But on Ebay the seller could just put a pic of a real card and send you a fake.

And lol yes Hynix has nothing to do with that card, besides the fact they made the flash chip on it.
