    Back Story: I own a PS2 fat SCPH 50001 with a Messiah 2 mod chip. I am a bit concerned with the laser as it plays PS1 games and DVD-ROM PS2 games fine. It just has a hard time playing Blue back CD games and backups on Ridata DVD-R. I want to re-calibrate the laser, but my knowledge of doing that is somewhat limited and not sure how I can get the meter to help me adjust it.

    Well I am considering a PS2 slim from the gamestop down the way with a decent laser on it. I was going to try craigslist but gamestop has the return policy so I'm probably gonna go with that if something goes wrong. I was wondering what series some users here suggest for models or versions. I've heard several of the slims have cooling problems and don't read certain games. My brother has a slim silver and it works great so I'm thinking it might be one of the silver models I want. Obviously I'm not gonna get the newer 900XX models for FMCB reasons. So my question, what models should I stay away from?

    Stick with the ps2 fattie. you can use it for streaming games via network, internal IDE or USB HDD using Open PS2 Loader. between those methods alone, most games will work.

    I really want to play games via disc because I have a decent collection of games... but if that's the solution i might go with that.

    Edit: Great community here. Wish I had found out about this back in 2003 when I got my PS2. Started lurking here in 2009 wish I had gotten involved earlier :/

    I prefer internal IDE HDD gaming to disc as it loads MUCH faster. Network streaming is convienent for games you don't play too often, but keep on a hard drive on a network share for the hell of it.

    Also, if you already have FMCB installed, you're golden. if not, you can always use a buddies ps2 to install it.

    Yeah actually I am considering getting FMCB installed. My main attraction there is the homebrew and using it to backup my saves on PC just incase one of my cards bites the dust.

    If you look at these pics you'll see that I really enjoy owning the actual game.

    @blasingame:

    dude you would definitely scope out craigslist or even gamestop for a used 'network adapter' (NA) instead of spending extra cash on a slim. let ebay be your last shopping place to resort for buying a NA. i once saw a used NA at gamestop for $15!

    the NA will allow you to plug in an 3.5 in. IDE hdd (get maxtor or seagate barracuda) to the PS2 bay (back of the console).
    PS1/SCPH-7501 | MM3 modchip
    PS2 v9 | 250GB hdd | PS3 component cable | katana 32mb mc
    PS3/CECH-2001B | 250GB hdd | 3.65 ofw

    One of the clerks at gamestop mentioned I needed some CD to install it, but if I'm launching homebrew I can just use a homebrew app right?

    Thanks for all this great help.

    You should own your games. but what I'm saying is that you would use IMGBurn to rip the disc image to ISO. from there you would use Winhiip 1.7.6 to install them on to a IDE HDD for use with the network adapter with both OPL (Open PS2 Loader) and HDLoader 0.8c

    or using the same method to rip the game into an iso and use usbutil to install it on a hard drive folder that is shared for network streaming of the game.

    that's what I do and don't have issues with it at all while preserving my originals.
