I've noticed several programs such as these don't display anything when used with component video output. Is there any way to fix that?
Well, so far I know for fact that uLaunchELF (all recent versions) and HDLD_SVR 0.8.6 work perfectly and display on my ps2 with component cables.
Like others have already stated, using most homebrews with component video output should work fine, and this definitely includes uLaunchELF (aka: uLE). I am one of the uLE maintainers and I regularly use both SCART and Component connections for my TVs (different sets), without any problems whatever.
Did you remember to configure the PS2 itself properly for Component output usage in its "System Configuration" menu ? There you need to ensure that the entry named "Component Video Out" has the value "Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr" rather than the value "RGB". It is quite normal for an HDTV set to show a black screen if that setting is wrong. But if that is the problem, then I don't see why you mention it as affecting only some homebrew programs, as it should affect everything...

Not here. That problem must be specific either to your PS2 setup or to the TV set used. My own Panasonic LCD HDTV has no problems at all displaying SNES-Station screens without flicker, using component signals, and that goes both for the SNES-Station GUI and the emulated games.
He was clearly referring to the homebrews mentioned in the title of his original post. These included uLaunchELF which is well known to work fine with component outputs. Hence my assumption that his console must be misconfigured...Which programs are those? PS2MAME?

I checked all the settings:
Screen Size: Full; Digital Out (Optical): Off, Component Out: Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr
Console version SCPH-39001; browser: 1.20
Tried all 3 screen sizes as well. I found my FreeMcBoot was out of date so after upgrading it, I can see one frame of the launched program before the screen goes blank. (Maybe this was before as well and I just didn't notice because I was tired?) They still run, and the monitor still reports a signal, but displays nothing. I tried briefly disconnecting the video cable and after plugging it back in it wouldn't detect a signal at all until reset.
FMCB itself, its configurator, and HDLoader display, but uLaunchELF and hdld_svr only show one frame before going blank. On SDTV they all show fine (if you can call SDTV "fine").
The monitor isn't full HD (1680x1050), so could that cause a problem?
Your monitor may be at fault.
My PS2 is also a v7 (SCPH-39001). The digital out has nothing to do with the video out.
NTSC televisions mainly use the Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr out on display, but your could use the RGB setting. Grab a composite cable just in case you have no video after the setting change. composite doesn't follow the component settings.
All of ps2 homebrew will show at 480i for NTSC systems through the component cables.
Well games, FreeMcBoot, etc do show up, but not these programs. The AR Max disc has a similar problem when using A/V cables: the main menu displays fine but the memory card manager (I think a separate program) displays in 50hz grayscale (PAL I guess?). That shows up fine in Component though.
I tried it with a slim PS2 as well (SCPH-75001 with a broken disc drive) and it has the same issue. I can clearly make out a frame or two before it blanks out, and they look normal. I also don't see the "LOADING..." screen in FMCB when I start a program. Is it possible the monitor can't handle 480i, even though it can go higher?
Is your TV P or I? if its P, I get issues with flickering/flashing/notshowing up on my 720P TV, use GSM, set it to 480P (if you have a P tv) and it should all work fine afterwards.
Barf, I suggest the same to you, GSM>480P>SNES Station. Worked for me.
I think the PS2 runs 480i on components, some P TVs may have issues with the interlace signal, and flash and flicker, while i TVs are fine with it. My bro in laws 1080P didn't flicker in SNES Station, only my 720P set did. His is a Sony LCD, which may be why it didn't flicker with an i signal on his P tv.
Or, some TVs don't like the i to P change, or iP to NTSC, like composite, signal and cause flashing. Its generally gonna be Progressive TVs hating interlace signals.
Whatever the reason, GSM can fix it.
