Without a modchip or some other exploit, no. No PS2 from any region can play games from any other region.

The last digit in the model number relates to regeion. 1 is Notrth America: the U.S. and Canada, regeion 1. Japanese machines are regeion 2, and end with 0, SCPH-30000, SCPH=10000, 15000, 18000.
My favorite, is the "Magic Gate" disclaimer, which says that the emblem "does not nessasarily imply compaitibility with other products" that have it. No, actually it was designed specificaly to restrict compatability, as well as with backups or "burned" media.
But that's an interesting way to put it.
oh yeah, US/CC games have the product codes SLUS_xxx.xx or SCUS_xxx.xx while Japanese games will be PBPX_xxx.xx, usually, so you know.

only if you buy it in Japan.
I don't mess with slimlines, so I don't know what the numbers on those are, but you'd have to buy a Japanese console, in any case.

Well, cool, but if you buy a Japanese PS2 it won't play any American games.
